This is something I used to do in the late 80’s.   I would get a short list of names of nursing home patients who had a history of having no visitors or phone calls ….then I would call and chat with them once a week. There are confidentiality issue to work around, but that can be done.  I found it rewarding, and it boosted their morale.    For reasons I can’t remember I stopped. I need to get back into the practice.

If you have a phone and a few extra minutes in your week, it might be worth doing.

If there is one thing the Wizard of Oz has taught me, it is not to trust school teachers on bicycles.

I eat dinner every Monday night at the local senior center. These folks are so happy to have some younger company, and have good stories and wisdom to share. Thank you for thinking of these folks that are probably in great need of contact and stimulation..

Some churches know people who are alone and can't get out.  Some churches have folks who call people, but some wish they had more people to make calls.

One of the first jobs I ever had was to answer the phone and spend hours talking to lonely little old ladies.

That was not my job.  I handle sales for the agents and these little old ladies would call to talk to their agent.  I just happened to be the person who answered their call.

Back then I liked to feel that I had brightened their day.

I just ran into a post I made sometime back.  I began making the calls when I did volunteer work.   Afterward, I continued contact with a few individuals after I left he organization.  I imagine they eventually died. Anyway, a personal mystery cleared up.
