In Buffalobird Woman’s book that I posted from earlier, she also describes balls of parched, ground corn and rendered animal fat.
It put me in mind of an Estonian folk food of mixed, toasted grains “Kama”. Below is a link to recipe. It is commonly sprinkled on sour milk or yogurt, as in the recipe below. However, same blogger also says in earlier times it would be rolled together with animal fats or butter.
