In season, I  force-feed bitter greens to the family.

kidding. Wilting it down with half garden greens and some sautéed onions is actually very yummy. I like to Pair it with eggs, for breakfast.

It partly depends on what's bugging your kidneys. Black Cherry juice or fruit ~4 ounces once a day got my tendency to gout under control, by helping my kidneys to excrete the stuff my joints didn't like and it's generally considered an anti-inflammatory.

Nothing fancy, just plain water.

Seriously, from watching older family members have kidney issues, most people just need more hydration.

After getting a reverse osmosis water system I was able to get off the gout meds.

Going on 3 years without meds and only one insignificant attack.

I resisted getting on meds until I had attacks where I could not walk for about two weeks.

I also try to drink lots of water and do breathing exercises.

Yep, those sound good.  Plenty of water to keep things moving.  Concentrates in the kidneys are no bueno.  All of those herbs are anti-inflammatory or potentiate that effect.  My current daily anti-inflammatory tea is turmeric, ginger, and galangal.  I keep added sugar to a minimum and avoid processed foods.  Probiotic foods seem to help a lot as well.  I'm prone to kidney stones and this approach has helped keep kidney stones to small manageable ones and very infrequent for the past decade.  So that's alright.

I'm also finding that my yoga asana practice helps an awful lot with keeping all of the systems functioning optimally.  Moon salutations really seem to work well on those kidneys.

Warmly,

Licorice is perhaps the best herb to strengthen the kidneys, but it can cause high blood pressure and should never be used in large doses or long term.

In restorative yoga, we target the kidneys by sitting in an easy forward fold. Think sitting on the floor in front of a chair, with your arms crossed on the chair seat and head rested on the backs of the forearms (or however is comfortable.)

Then feel your breath in the back of the body. Let every inhale wash up and swirl around the kidneys. Relax with every exhale. The breath does all the work, giving the kidneys a little squeeze as your body fills with air.

The low-effort squeeze and release that comes with breathing in forward fold massages the kidneys and promotes fluid exchange. Not saying it's a magic curative thing, just generally healthy.

Inorganic minerals = Not good for kidneys.

Herbs help remove inorganic minerals.

Best (artificial) water = Pure Distilled H20 (no inorganic minerals)

Best (natural) water = Water filtered thru a TREE and. ( Fruit Juice / Tree sap = pure natural water plus organic minerals/sugars/etc)

The less dehydrating habits you have, the less your need for water.

1. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Drinking plenty of water helps to flush out toxins from your body and can help to improve kidney function.

2. Eat a healthy diet. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help to improve kidney function.

3. Exercise regularly. Regular exercise can help to improve kidney function by increasing circulation and reducing stress.

4. Avoid smoking and alcohol. Smoking and alcohol can increase the risk of kidney damage, so avoiding them is important for improving kidney function.

Adequate fluids, hydration. Watch protein intake, too much can make kidneys work harder. Keep your heart healthy. Heart function and kidney function are often connected. If your heart gets weaker and is not as an efficient pump, more work for the kidneys,ie extra fluid to rid body of. I think there are hormones involved, too.

Piggybacking on this advice, know that your pulmonary system and your kidneys are linked and what effect one will effect the other.

Hydrate, sleep, exercise. They are boring but they are effective.
