The Wheaton Scale mentions having read an article on Permaculture.? Does it have to mention Permaculture in the title?   Does Permaculture have to be mentioned in the text of the article …or book?  If not,  how will we know it is an article or book on Permaculture?   I would certainly like a better guideline that a “Webster” definition of “ A Permaculture article  is an article that discusses Permiculture.”

Interesting question. One Straw Revolution comes to mind, because it seems to be about permaculture to me, but I am pretty sure the P-word is not in the book. What about an ethnography that lacks the P-word but is about the land management practices of an indigenous culture, like the Tolowa of Redwood Country, or Australian first nations, who were regenerative for many thousands of years? I would bet Bill Mollison would say they are all about permaculture, and in my experience these types of ethnographies in my university Anthropology courses primed me for permaculture.

The first and foremost:

This is the permaculture bible, also referred to as the "Big Black Book". It covers the basis of permaculture, the philosophy, the ethics, and the design concepts. It also touches on the climatic factors, trees, water, soil, earth works, and aquaculture

This book is a fantastic introduction—it gets my vote as best Permaculture primer. Think Gaia’s Garden, without the glossy pages and photos, packaged in a small paperback, with line drawings...Okay, that might seem hard to imagine, but in a smaller, lighter-weight way The Basics of Permaculture Design is just enough “why” to support just enough “how” to get people seeing our lifestyles in a new way, and get mental gears turning as to new projects and patterns and decisions, covering a lot of what Hemenway’s books both did.

To me, one of the best places to learn about permaculture is right here on the forum.

It has been pointed out to me the scale refers to reading articles and not books. The core concept remains the same… what is an article on Permaculture?

Most of these are about one aspect of permaculture or another.

Hi Raven,

But how do we know that they are?  I suppose, I am backing into the question, “What makes Permaculture Permaculture.”

I think she's lovely. It's this tiny ad that called her crazy:
