I found this small animal dead on my backyard patio. I'm not sure what it is and was wondering if anyone has any idea on what it could be. I was thinking baby rat but I believe the tail is too small. I'm located in southern ontario. The size is about 4 to 5 inches. Thanks

Does Ontario have true moles (not the pocket gophers we call moles on the prairies)?

The body shape and paws strike me as a burrowing animal. I can't really see the nose in the photo. A juvenile most likely? That's my best guess.

Edit: looking at mole photos online, i'm doubtful that's what it is. Hm.

The head has been partially eaten so I was unable to take a picture of the face/nose. Could it be an infant puppy perhaps...maybe taken by a bird and dropped on my patio?

sure looks like rodenty teeth on the bottom jaw.
i'm not super familiar with the wildlife in ontario but it looks like one of those non-squirrel rodents, like a pika or mountain beaver or something.
i agree, burrower feet and coat.
it's the little round ears that seem the strangest.
a mystery!!

I had a look at Onrtario mammals and at first glance I thought it maybe looked like a bear cub - but it would be far too small. Maybe one of the muscellids like a fisher cat baby? The tails doesn't look right though.

that was what i saw looking at the teeth and the tail, but... 4 to 5 inches is really big for a baby rabbit. also not sure about that ear shape.

See where your hand is? Not there. It's next to this tiny ad:
