I just saw this video on YouTube. It shows a water pump that appears as if it can run indefinitely without electricity. Thus at the output a water wheel generator could be attached and free electricity should be the result.

Who can build it? I'd love to see how much energy can be produced from one unit. Scale them up to 10, 20, 10,000...how much can be produced?

Check out this short video:

If something this simple actually worked, there would be millions of them in operation already.

That kind of thinking Glenn is what prevents people from trying things that could ultimately work.

Given all of these, I think the water should flow:
- It is a siphon, we know siphons work.
- The weight of the water in the barrel will create a larger pressure to push the water out.
- The water exiting will create a vacuum that sucks up water from the pipe that is extended into the water.
- If that suction pipe is short enough that the weight of water within it is 75% or less than the water in the barrel, then it should be able to keep sucking the water up into the barrel.

And if the water is flowing, it can turn a generator wheel.

The video shows a simple siphon. Well known and not mysterious.
I would say the desire to build it has to come from you. If you see endless energy. Chasing the ever so "easy" "free" "endless" energy machines takes you down a rabbit hole of murky YouTube videos with no technical details and unreproducible results and allusions to men in black stifling discovery. Feel free to explore.

One unit of water falling from the top of barrel to outlet valve at bottom releases X units of energy. If the top of barrel is 2 times the barrel height above the water, it will take 2X units of energy to raise one unit of water to the top of the barrel. You would need an input of energy to keep the water flowing.

The width of a container has nothing to do with the static pressure at the bottom; the water height in the container is the only relevant factor.

A siphon can make water flow up and over the edge of its container, but the siphon's exit must be lower than the interior water surface to flow out by gravity.

Unit would not work. The internet is full of these kind of videos that are very misleading. If it worked, there would be hundreds of videos of people building these things and doing all manner of stuff with them. The only way this unit would work is if the outlet was lower than the lake/river level like if you had it sitting on the edge of a dam. Then it would work as a regular siphon, problem is, you already have potential energy stored there in the water, due to gravity, and you wouldn't need the siphon to generate power any more. The unit in the video would work until all of the water he put in had drained out, plus a small amount more due to the vacuum created pulling some in. Unfortunately, the water falling 6 inches from the bottom of the spout can not create enough vacuum to pull the same amount of water up the intake, because the exit is higher than the intake pipe. Eventually, more water leaves than can be pulled up the pipe. And as always (unfortunately) the law of conservation of energy wins again.

Thanks Glenn, that is a reasonable response, one I am pretty sure is true. Which would foil my idea of turning it into an electric generator.

Some ideas are workable.
The diameter of the container is relevant, but not at the dimensions stated. The syphon will come to equilibrium at the point where both water levels are the same height, the one in the suction pipe and the one in the tank. There will be a very small difference in level because of capillary action. However, if the pipe diameter of the suction pipe is reduced to 0.001mm the lift could be achieved.
progress would be extremely slow,

So lets see we are to spend our time, energy effort exploring if this device works while you do nothing to check out if it works for yourself...

Naw,   I have spent time on theses devices before, and will not fall for that trap.

If the device works it will be replicated, and third party verified,   I have wind, solar, and hydro to tap into for energy that costs me a bit for solar panels, wind turbines that give me energy.

Youtube is flooded with "free energy" videos because it generates views and thus revenue for those who post these devices that do not work.

So, no,  you believe it works put your money on the table to buy the parts and build it....

Myself not one dime of my $ will be spent on this, but you are free to do so.....

Example of a debunked video ->

I #can't # wait to try that free energy machine....but right now I'm still laboring over forcing my lawn mower to run on water.

i can see a health and safety issue with that ,very risky , he s not wearing wellies ---and that particular organic model of lawnmower has a design flaw ---the exhaust is rear facing and at some point he is going to step in some thing

Hmmm. Maybe you need the optional extra K9 hands-free controller. Or whatever you call them.

Free energy is a touchy subject...

I have seen other post here on the forum about that pump conception ... it that free energy?

The only example I know of about free energy is when sunlight warms a room.

The problem seems to me that there are so many free-energy scams around that people tend to fall in one of two camps. One camp thinks they're all amazing but doesn't know how to build them, which is probably just as well if they are scams, which they almost certainly are. And the other camp are the physicists and engineers who are so used to the scammers that they've hardened their hearts and don't want to waste yet more time and energy on attempting to sort the wheat from the chaff only to discover, yet again, that it's all chaff and no wheat.

But then I remember an awful lot of people declaring that rocket mass heaters can't work because it goes against what they think the science says.

And I remember old arguments here on permies about how no, you can't possibly have a horizontal riser because by definition a riser goes up, not along. And then Matt Walker goes and makes one, and we've happily kept the house warm all last winter with the  Matt Walker Tiny Cookstove we built to his design.

And I've also had a retired aeronautic engineer with a history of working with alternative energy and a PhD in physics come over to see how the build was going and had him start shouting at me because I said that the hot gasses go along here, through this bit, up here, along under the stove top, and then down here. He just couldn't accept that hot gas could go down and shouted that hot air goes UP!!!

I go to pieces when anyone starts shouting and just didn't have the energy or the inclination to explain that heat is relative and the gases had just lost a lot of heat as they passed under the stove top and were now heavier than the gases that were busy pushing them along, so they had no choice but to sink. But the fact remains that the stove worked well, and the expert who really should have known better and kept his mind open was so set against it working that he couldn't accept that it did. I don't invite him to the house any more. My energy is in short supply and I won't waste it on anyone who shouts at me...

There is, however, plenty of energy all around me if I can find ways to capture it and use it. All that wood to be gathered and burned, all that sunshine...

Having said all that, the video in the first post of this thread looks just like a syphon to me and I can't see any way that it would work. I've played with enough syphons to simply not believe it.

Here's a video about a practical, everyday application of syphons...

What is perceived as free energy is generally based on the way we perceive it as so called free. It just depends on the way we experience hardship or benefit.
Take the room filling with light from the sun. The room needs to be build first. It will have to have a window or opening to let the sunshine in. It will have to have to have some insulation to keep the heat within. It will have to face the direction of the light.
All the above conditions are generated by investment of energy, the hardship part of the equation. When the design is such, that natural sunlight can not reach the room, different measures can be taken.
51deg north where I live, sun shines at a shallow angle in winter. We have a pond away from the house at an angle that reflects the light into the house in winter. We also have leaved trees. In summer the light gets reflected at a steeper angle, and the light reflected from the water does not enter the room, so it remains cool. Also, when the trees are in leaf, they stop the rising and setting sun shining directly into the rooms.
So by providing the conditions, the investment, we obtain the benefit as a trade-off. Recognition of the fact that all energy is free, but the conversion imposes an investment that is generally monetised, kept secret, guarded, copyrighted and sold, fake and true.
I hope that we can pool our knowledge to further wise investment through discussion and explanation in non convoluted terminology with least abbreviations and simple thought. ( common sense) .
With growing knowledge the responsibility to share also grows. Most of my clients are scared to ask questions at first, in order not to appear stupid, once they know that I do not judge them, they unpack.

There is an old saying,     "The water is free, but the plumbing is not"...

It was once pointed out to me that the missing element to harnessing energy is skill.          A ball point pen is cheap and everywhere in our grasp.    Yet the skill required to make one most of us do not have.       It is not a conspiracy, rather it takes work $ and time to make devices to make that ball point pen.

Great thoughts from great minds... for Burra, Mart and Reiner, I offer y'all  appreciation.  I ruminate as I sip tea , reminded why Permies is a place of solace and motivation for many

My past life teaching secondary school was a blessing. I loved the energy and hope in every student. One mantra I kept repeating
"Nothing is free in this world"
as we read great novels , discussed, then wrote reflective essays. A youth hung back after the dismissal bell one day for a friendly debate.  I will be honest, he said, I sometimes sold drugs in middle school , it seemed like free money, it was so easy.  I was silent, then reminded him, But what does it cost society, what about the cost of jail, moral decline, even being shot while selling?
Two years later the same kid was arrested for selling bootleg DVDs, lost a scholarship to university and a decade of his youth.
Truly, nothing is free.
(With apologies to Newton's laws of physics)

Maybe he went home and went to bed. And took this tiny ad with him:
