Hello Matt

My time is split between Augusta and Harpswell (summer). Bangor and Portland are within "striking" distance, and although I am used to the drives, I have to agree with Manda on the commute.  Wife and I were fortunate enough to have a 20 minute commute - if we walked.  But it did leave us in a slightly vulnerable position ... "since you are so close, can't you come in and fix this (fill in your own choice of office issues)?"

An annual Maine Permies meeting sounds like a great idea.  Count me in!

Observation - can you get yourself identified as Maine Permies admin or whatever the thread overseer may be deemed?

And since we are here in the Maine forum, anyone else planning to build RMH in the near future?

Nice, Randy!  An RMH build would make a nice meeting backdrop....just saying

@ Randy,
Good to hear from you! Maine IS pretty spread out. I've been driving an hour to work for 10.5 of the last 12 years... so I'm more used to it. Spending a few hours at a restaurant is nice, but it is difficult to drive a couple hours just for that.

@Greg - Haha :)
Having some sort of workday was already on my list for a possibility, and I will add in a RMH specifically. I'd like to build one, but I always hesitate when I have no masonry experience and have not seen one built in person (and currently don't have a place for one either). It could be interesting to offer some sort of workshop/workday to build a rocket mass heater. Do we have anyone in Maine that has built one before? If not, maybe we need to find some expert who wants to go on vacation to Maine and coordinate :)

Hello to all!  I did not see the messages in the past about Maine meet-ups.  I live in Linneus and would like to attend such meets.

Hi Alden,
Nice to met you. I think there are a lot of permies from Maine who ignore the regional forum :), haha.

Every time I see someone posting something and it says they are from Maine, I try to shoot them a PM and let them know about this. Sometime in January, I'll start another thread for the 2024 meetup. I need to collect some ideas and see what might be possible.

Hi Anna,
Nice to meet you! I go through Monticello when I have to travel to Fort Kent for work sometimes.

I had no idea how many people from Maine were on this forum when I started :). I hope you can make it to the next get-together.

Manda Bell wrote:Hahahah. Oh wow. We never would’ve moved here (or any other nowhere for that matter) if we had to commute. The last time we moved and worked outside the house we only considered homes within a 15-minute drive of the office. It limited our choices sure but oh man it was worth it. That’s usually the most time we can stand to waste in a car. Personal preference, I guess!

Since moving here though we are slowly getting used to shopping errands taking all day (despite our best efforts.. haha) 😃 No place is perfect but so far we absolutely love it here. Right now I’m enjoying my coffee while listening to birds and rain. A bear literally just strolled past the window as I was typing! We’ve never experienced anything like this place before. I mean, this is what we moved here for! I can’t even say how much we love it. Maine had exceeded all of our expectations. It’ll be even better when my planned food forest starts really coming together.

Who knows, perhaps after a few years here a few 2-hour away adventures won’t seem so cumbersome. Maybe?!

when you live in northern Aroostook your shortest drive to anything considered a decent sized town is at least 1.5hrs which is Presque ilse which is the closest Walmart. we order most things online which saves us time and fuel.

Hey guys, calling on any help that can be given, legally or financially...

Town of Old Town is filling a lawsuit against us over our chickens, we are willing to fight to protected our rights and are looking for any help others can give. Small claims is $6000 or less I don't know what fees we might incur and am reaching out to others who want to protect their rights before they are infringed upon!

If we get enough money we will take on a lawyer to represent us!

Hi Anthony,
That is crazy to hear and I am sorry it is happening. I don't know that I have much to donate right now, but I would recommend posting something in the Permies CrowdFunding Forum, which would have a broader audience, I think.

I also wonder if the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund might have some resources for you?

Hi All,
Just pinging this old thread for anyone who has not been watching the new 2024 Maine Permies Meetup thread.

This year we are having three presenters followed by a meal at the Timber Kitchen. Because the meeting space and restaurant needs numbers, I am asking people to register ahead of time so I can get a count.
