How much energy/effort do you want to spend on what is known to be a temporary solution? There is known to be a lot of wear on these heaters. The feed shrinks as the end burns off and the bottom of the barrel gets glowing hot. Adding cob would increase the temperature of the barrel by insulating it, perhaps to a point the barrel melts or oxidizes. So yes mass could be added. I think the chain link with rocks might be the best balance of effort for the life of the device. Paul has some comments about the short comings of the pocket rockets too in another thread. you may wish to search that out. I have seen a "Russian Rocket" built entirely of cob brick that is similar in size. This is not a RMH at all though... Check this out. A second layer of cob brick or thick cob itself would keep the bottom parts from being too hot to touch. The firebox door would still be a hot place, but children learn quick and if the door is not pointed towards the normal play area, the rest should be fine.

So, those are the guillotine air valves? (I'm not sure what to call it--the things that make the air either go or not go through a particular pipe.) How do you reach the one up by the ceiling? I suppose that's not a problem for Paul. Just last night I watched my husband (6'4") just reach up and unscrew all the holdings for the light fixture over our bed, then change the light bulb, from over on the floor next to the bed. If you're tall enough, the ceiling is not out of reach!

Hey julia I asked that ? then I looked carefully and there was a handle hanging down for the height impaired people. My guess is that they put the valve up by the ceiling so that extra pipe would radiate heat as an additional bell. If the gate was at the bottom cold air would come down the center of the chimney be heated by the room air around the inside of the pipe and take that heat up and out of the house. With the valve at the top the reverse happens. Heat rises from the horizontal pipe up the center and is cooled by the room air around the inside of the pipe and falls down into the horizontal pipe and continues on into the mass to give up the rest of its heat. I noticed that the lee efficient spin damper is still being used where you eventually want the exhaust flow to go. Very good design and execution.

I hope to get sketch up working and post on the RMH forum my plan for a three room RMH that wold work in a wofaty.

Congrats on the new camera! Looking over the other pictures, I was thinking maybe it was time for a camera upgrade... Looks like the new one will do the job!
