C5 asks, " Can a pig and a llama co-habitate? "

C5 here, from Dark Green Mountain Survival Research Centre.  https://darkgreenmountainsurvivalresearchcentre.wordpress.com/   I have a quik question. Can a Pig and a Lama share the same space. It is to do a particular job. I want to bring in a new pig to clear some scrub land for me as a sort of bull doser.... but it is outside of my security zone where the dogs keep wildlife at bay. We have packs of coy wolves in the area. A younger pig would be vulnerable. Lamas seem to be miserable punk rock anarchist animals. I have had my eye on them for a while...because they wont take shit from the cyotes. (I do worry about the safety of my dogs though). I know lamas can sometimes be a danger to the very flocks we bring them in to protect, though.

And that is why I come to you for advice. Can a lama and a pig share the same electric fenced in area without one killing the other.

Hi Ross;  Not positive about lamas but it has been my experience with pigs that they don't bother with any other domestic animals, they just walk underneath and continue looking for something to eat.  Sort of self centered, only concerned with whats to eat...  That said all animals should have a buddy... the pig should have another pig to hang with ...  I expect the lama should as well.  Being so much taller than a pig they might not bond with them. But they definitely will protect what is theirs from  predators. If your pig does not have a buddy it will want to leave and find one...  not good with coy dogs or coyotes or wolves or even bears, for that matter. Piggys are very smart but can be to curious for their own good.  In my opinion 2 piggys and 2 lamas will work better than one.

Ya. That was the exact poster I was thinking of.
We have been down in peru for 8 months now...about to head back to canada. No shortage of lamas. I have had my eye on them for a while now...as they can live in some truely shit conditions, I ate the meat though and found it highly dissapointing. Flavourless beef. That almost made me bail on the idea.

It may be salvageable by spices though. I am not ready to give up on it though.

Just like my wife....I like the idea of an animal that will back me up in a knife fight.

Still, no answere to my question. I need a lama owner. Will a lama kill a pig. Pigs are freindly enough if raised right.

On a personal note. We just did a farm visit...and saw "fattening" cages where a pig couldnt even turn around. I left quikly and tried to find my happy place...because I just couldnt afford to be arrested for kicking the shit out of the owner...in a forein country.

I always mix and match my various farm critters. Out of all of them... pigs are the ones to keep your eye on the most. They can and will kill other farms animals. Most of the time, its one of the males that gets bloodthirsty, but I have seen it with a mature female also.

For the most part, the llamas don't like the pigs much. But if the pasture is big enough, there shouldn't be any problems. Just keep your eye on things at first.

I've seen a coyote that had been killed by a sow. It was more than just killed. Destroyed would be a a better word. Do they really need a guard animal? Maybe for bears? Maybe 5-6 hogs?

Ross seems to thinking about having juvenile pigs, which might be vulnerable to attack. But, what if a few juveniles were paired with a big sow? She wouldn't be aggressive to the youngsters, would she? (I have no idea--I don't know about pigs. Just spitting out ideas here!). You could even use the sow as a breeder so she's a little more productive.

We have alpacas. We don't have pigs (or llamas, but just turn up the NDM and you can get an approximation pretty readily). Part of the reason we like having the alpacas is that we have just enough grazing land to run a single cattle beast at a time, and they socialise well so we don't get "psycho cow" syndrome. Our experience has been that the 'pacas look after themselves really well, including delivering nasty kicks to the odd dog that has jumped in with them. A llama could be lethal to something that threatened it.

My gut says camelids in general would do fine with pigs and might even enjoy having them around. They definitely enjoy the chooks and ducks...the fun game is to charge across the paddock at full tilt into a bunch of fowl and send them scattering.

On the meat angle, I recommend making them into sausages. We had one go lame a few years back and had our homekill butcher dispatch him before winter set in (it would have been cruel to have him falling repeatedly in cold and muddy conditions). Best batch of snags we've had to date.

a lama is a high ranking Buddhist, very even tempered even mellow. should get on with pigs as they value all levels of life.

I know this is a bit thread is a bit older, but I thought I'd put in my thoughts. My family got into llamas back in '96. We have never had pigs, but the llamas are generally very social and even tempered. Don't mess with a cria (baby llama), don't abuse them, and don't treat them like pets and you won't get spit on unless you're caught in a crossfire. We have had various cats and dogs over the years, and the llamas are more curious about new animals than anything.
If you put one llama in with another animal they will usually bond, but if you try putting two llamas in with other animals, the llamas will buddy up and leave the other animals to themselves.

Phil, I am really glad to hear what you said about eating them. When we got into llamas the idea of treating them like livestock and using them as they are in their native habitat was taboo. It appears that eating them is gaining more social acceptance and is something we are looking into very seriously.
