I have limited bandwidth currently. I downloaded the whole ebook draft (v.60) a few weeks ago, after this was posted. The second chapter barely mentions risers. Is this material that hadn't been added to the draft? Is there a more recent version the whole book available to download?

The whole book, in draft form, was posted.  And then we worked on it and worked on it and worked on it some more.  Eventually, i wrote this chapter.  And then we got the idea to mash the chapter to an ebook.  Mud and I polished it and then got awesome feedback from some experts.

So the answer to your question is:  time travel.  We've been skipping through the months at a rate of about 30 days per month.  After enough time travel, the stuff we have written is more.

How much pie would it take to have Paul from fall of 2023 send back a copy of the whole book to me from that point? I could use a jump start on my projects...

Step 1:  time travel into the future to find out when it will be done.  When I know, I might remember to post in this thread and then we will all know.  :)

I don't want to be greedy and ask for the completed book, but seems like 9 months of progress would give a nice boost. Figure we're talking a huge amount of pie to pull this off, but if I sink my savings into it, some time in January you could buy it back for a similar price, freeing yourself up for other projects during the year.

Suppose that the earlier draft was something like "version 0.2".  Are you saying that you would be glad to buy "version 0.4"?

I was more thinking that if I could act as middle man with a future version of yourself I could work it out to be free.

If we were talking actual cash in the land of make-it-real, it would depend on what was covered in that 20% addition. Something like the riser section only on mass options or manifold construction might do it...

Thanks this is excellent! My favorite heat riser is missing though. A friend of my found on Peter van den Berg website about zero costs riser made of ash and clay.
It requires that one have a lot of ash and lots of good will for mixing. Potassium and sodium from ash react with clay to produce Na, K alumo-silicates,  minerals which do the job.

Sorry with all good will I can not find this info on Peter webpage again. We build this in winter 2018.....  Searching for this seems as  looking for needle in hay.  Asking Peter is maybe quicker...

On the other hand I can provide another link though from one French  material scientist giving the lecture on very similar material which can be made by  mixing NaOH and clay or zeolites. The reaction which happens is similar to what is going on when mixing ash and clay... Sorry that the video is 2,5 hours long....  



edit  review: this video is very demanding I had tones of notes on it. It seems for me to be following scenario: Poor Professor is defending himself from attacks from industry. One also have to adjust the ear to his way of speaking and accent, but along the way in two hours then he gives good overview of terminology and explains what happens.  There is a slide  in the video, where the rock forming reaction is presented very well. The whole process is very simple. But one has to plow through first for the information.

Interesting.  From 2010 - and I am guessing that results vary wildly, depending on clay characteristics and make-up.

I'd like to see more testing and ways to test cclay content before suggesting its use to the masses who are not interested in experimentation or potential premature failure.

My friends and I were lucky to have pure clay, not a mixture of clay and silt or clay and sand for example. We were happy with result, zero cost J tube.
Basic simple pure clay is good. We used huge amount of wood ash until like in the process of mixing perlite and clay-so when you press it makes this buff.
3 people, several weekends. It was really slow process. With firing it just gets better, no cracks even on ship with constant vibrations. We are lucky with clay and wood ash.  To repeat this experiment from 2018, it is on my todo list, overdue.
This mixture if you have proper clay and ash is free. In area where I live we are lucky with rocks.

I'll be interested in buying the RMH book, when it comes out.

I just bit the bullet and bought Ianto Evans and Leslie Jackson' s RMH book and his house book: with all the work that goes into writing books (and I don't TV) I figure having hard copies of my favorite books, and difficult how-to books (well difficult for me) makes absorbing information easier -- and allows sticky notes and papers jammed in between pages etc. But also it encourages the author to write more (but we don't want to kill you off Paul -- I do think we can collectively be a demanding lot so it's good you have some supportive people.

Thanks again Paul for your efforts to educate us. My first go will be an outdoor RMH and then it depends how that goes, but RMH's for idiots and toddlers (or such an appendix or supplement) would be something I would pay for as well!

Has anyone tried starlite for firebrick or riser insulation? How well does it insulate over time?  How crackable is it?

Or mycelium starlite mixture?

I hope the new book will also help novice builders/dummies learn how to follow a plan. I know the Builders Guide is really carefully written, but I still often have questions and I think it’s stuff that an experienced builder would just already know how to adjust for or interpret, but a novice might not.

Hey Joshua. The book is focused on the materials and design. Not really a step by step building guide.
I hope that you got around to building your first stove. It’s a bit intimidating at the beginning. But once you’re in it it gets easier. And you can always count on a lot of support from the community here. Maybe just start a thread, there’s a lot of folks eager to answer detail questions.

What’s the starlite you’re mentioning? Cool name for sure.
