Not the best photo but a new insect to me. A sort of solitary wasp, the body was about 3/4 inch long, very thin. Apparently a predator to caterpillars

I found this pupa the other day - clever looking like something you wouldn't want to mess with....

black and yellow chrysalis butterfly pupa
not a wasp

I'd not seen one so had to look it up...It appears to be a pupa of a magpie moth. I see them a lot for a few weeks in the summer, but have not noticed the other parts of it's life cycle before. There was a single pupa attached to one of the branches of hazel I had coppiced over winter. According to UK Moths it is not so common in Scotland, but we have loads here, maybe because our winters are pretty mild.

I found a zebra swallowtail caterpillar on the pawpaw tree, the only host plant for this beautiful butterfly.

I'm not sure what kind of beetle this is, but it was pretty. Saw him crawling across my lawn.

Maybe... but the shape almost fits the golden ground beetle better than the fiery searcher now that I look it up.

This is the first time I have seen grasshoppers chilling on top of a sunflower. Saw one just chilling on a leaf, and then a friend hiding under the edge one plant over.

I found a huddle of bugs that I am not familiar with.

Some form of bee? They just hung on the leaf and didn't leave when I was nearby.

Caught some great spangled fritteraries mating on our mithcanthus grass. We have tons of wild violets around so I guess that's why they are here.

I don't get it. A whale wearing overalls? How does that even work? It's like a tiny ad wearing overalls.
