    UPDATE: Added support for aspect specific Oddball entries at the bottom of each aspect with an Oddball category.  Added support for duplication of items in aspects that allow duplication.  Fixed some cells that were white that should have been grey.

    Thank you for this document!  I love how easy it is to use and does the calculations for me!  

    I just heard that Natural Medicine has been updated with Straw and Wood with lots more options added at the Sand level.  Please let me know when you have updated the google doc.

    This Google Sheet is downright fantastic and feature rich.  Well done, R Parian!

    I've always taken pride in good spreadsheet/management skills, but this Sheet is on a whole new level.  

    If someone is curious about what exactly *are* these Skills to Inherit Property (SKIP), or wants to understand the Permaculture Experience program according to Paul, without reading a book, or wading through forums all day piecing it together, this is basically all you need.  I received this one as a SKIP book Kickstarter backer, and really its inclusion was the reason I went ahead and made a backing in the first place.  It helps cut through all the forums chatter and fun PEP marketing, and gets you down to business on useful skills and, should you choose, participate in the accreditation program.

    Benefits of this tracker:
  • Very clean
  • Links are well arranged (I like the "back" features, too)
  • Professional "To Do" / "Pending" / "Certified" check box management,
  • Auto populates any "To Do" items onto a single page for your execution,
  • Helps you quickly scan the program, and weigh the (expected) full cost/burden of participating in the SKIP-PEP before jumping in (Luke 4:28-30, anyone?)

    • Only question I have is the recommended procedure for updates, as version 1.3 naturally doesn't have all PEP levels fleshed out.

    As a side note: If you are thinking about the "inheriting property" aspect of this open, online, homesteading accreditation program, here's an executive summary:
    The potential for an individual to inherit land is made possible by:
         Achieving "PEP" 2,3,4 rank levels, which are made of
            topical area skillset "Badges", which are made of
               "Badge Bits" (BBs), which are earned through
                  Your accomplishments = Your activities + photo/video evidence posted on the correct forums.
    All of the above is enabled through requisite participation in the forum, and quality assurance is achieved through permies.com credentialing staff volunteers certification.  Simple enough.

    Good question George and thank you for the very thorough review!  

    Version 1.3 has all PEP levels that are currently defined.  When additional levels get defined, I add them to the spreadsheet and bump the spreadsheet version when the additions are significant.  Minor tweaks or fixes to isolated formulas typically are fixed in the current latest version rather than bumping the version.  There isn't a great way to get these changes out to current users as far as I'm aware other than to post some details here about what changes were made so existing users can copy/paste the fixes into their copy of the spreadsheet or copy/paste the data from their spreadsheet into a new copy of the spreadsheet.  I hope this helps clarify the current update procedure.

    Hi everybody,
    I’ve been using the BB tracker for four months and it helped me keep track of which BBs I needed to do and what my progress looked like as I moved toward PEP1. During the summer events at Wheaton Labs, I not only accomplished PEP1 certification but also completed all 22 sand badges.

    Thank you for making such a wonderful spreadsheet and I look forward to using it to help me keep track of everything as I work towards PEP2!

    Recent minor updates are now updated in spreadsheet version 1.4:

    Greywater
    1) Two BBs (move one willow feeder can to a willow candy warehouse, move one willow feeder can to a willow tree) got moved to the Jenkins list.

    Textiles
    1) STRAW: 3 BBs moved to wood or iron.
    2) WOOD: new required BBs (seed list item, patchwork quilt, tick mattress), 125 points to complete Badge, slight changes to subsections (removed the bedding list requirement, some points required might have changed including housewares now 8 pt)
    3) IRON: new required BB (mattress with compressed stuffing)

    Also added a tab similar to the ToDo tab for the Pending items.

    The spreadsheet has been updated for recent small adjustments to Animal Care, Greywater, and Plumbing.  Foraging also got a fairly major overhaul to explicitly list every item in the Fresh, Dry, Tea, and Dish lists and to do better automatic calculations for Sand items that count towards Straw. If you already have a copy of the spreadsheet in use and plan to do more Foraging, I'd recommend grabbing this updated version of the Foraging sheet.

    I was updating my PEP BB Calculator and I noticed that the "create a natural medicine journal" is still on your Natural Medicine Page.  I believe that requirement has been removed and now a person needs to pick one item from each list (harvest, decoct, infuse, etc.)

    On the Greywater tab, the links next to straw and wood badge levels point to the foraging page. I'm assuming it's a copy-n-paste artifact that never got cleaned up. It was easy to fix on the copy that I'm using, but I figured you'd want to fix it on the for-sale template.

    Hey, I was just thinking about how I'd like the checkboxes to act like radio buttons and while I'm a spreadsheet jocky IRL, I couldn't think of anything formula-based because it isn't merely state info that's needed. But googling lead me to an answer pretty quickly and the scripting is pretty light.     Interesting.  I'll play with it a bit and see how it goes.  I'm on the fence on this one because I actually check both the ToDo and the Pending column in cases where the BB involves one last step of waiting a long time - like for tinctures where you do all the work, and then you have to wait for 6 weeks for it to soak.  So while I'm waiting I have both the ToDo and the Pending column checked, then once the time elapses, I take one last picture and post the BB and uncheck the ToDo column but leave the Pending column checked until the BB is approved.  This helps me differentiate between BBs I haven't started (only ToDo checked) and BBs I have submitted but aren't yet approved (only Pending checked).

    Neat! I'm new and have been mostly just doing the ones I can do in a short time, but I can see the use-case you're describing. It may or may not be worth the coding time to do something along those lines, but if you choose not to, I get it. (I can do whatever I want with my copy. :-) )

    I think there may be some middle ground on this one.  Checking the Certified button could automatically uncheck both ToDo and Pending.  I'll play with it and see what I can do.

    Hey, I just qualified for my first sand badge and I went to document it and ended up using this formula (except replace "{" with "[") to build a list in column I so that I could just cut and paste the links into the post editor:

    =if(H5<>"","{URL=" & H5 & "]" & F5 & "{/URL]","")

    You might think of some more clever or more-refined way to do basically the same thing, but it's a feature that might be valuable to other users of your sheet and I thought I'd just lay it out as something to consider.

    Thank you Christopher Weeks for the suggestion to make applying for badges easier!  I've now incorporated your suggestion into version 1.5 of the spreadsheet.  It isn't exactly what you had suggested, but is based on your suggestion.  The forum markup formatted list of BBs will now show up collapsed under each badge name

    I also updated version 1.5 with the scripting to automatically uncheck ToDo and Pending when Certified is checked based on the radio button idea Christopher posted.  Note that it will still allow you to have both ToDo and Pending checked at the same time if desired, and if you ever want ToDo and/or Pending also checked as well as Certified checked, it will allow you to re-check them after checking Certified clears them.

    I'd vote for not using radio buttons as I do what you are describing to differentiate the stage of the BB.

  • Comfrey leaf to the natural medicine - sand badge Harvest, dry, and store one of the following for a tea, infusion, or decoction
  • Set up a conventional bee hive to the animal care - straw badge


    • I also fixed up a few links on the PEP Badge: Natural Medicine wiki page that were linking directly to posts rather than to threads.
