Your meme looks great! Feel free to post it on the Meme Factory thread for people to use!

Okay, I need to clarify this quickly: nobody has to wait for my approval to go from Sounboard to Factory, they just have to wait long enough for anyone on permies.com to critique your meme and say that it looks good.

Here is a side by side comparison, which of these two is easier for you to read (1 or 2)?

I think number two is easier to read...although I think it is more fun to use colors for text....black and white seem to show up clearer.

I am worried about people getting in trouble for incorrectly quoting Paul, or incorrectly quoting any other well-known permaculturists. Do you think requiring citation and references to where the quote was found or originated would help keep the quoting business in order? If you are reading this topic Paul, please may you tell us your thoughts on people quoting you?

That does make it easier. Although, I would like for Paul and/or a moderator to give their opinions on quoting.

I don't know the answer....I know that Paul is immersed in the solar workshop now, so maybe later this week we can find out clearer guidelines. I like the idea of using our own photos and text....that's just me though. I think Eric Hoffman would have some great input having had experience in graphics. I think his suggestions in THIS POST are important and I am sure there are other folks who will get involved eventually.

Some of the staff grabbed me and sent me here to answer this.

I am misquoted a lot. Sometimes the mis-quote has me saying something stupid. And other times they have me saying something really cool. Most of the time, the quote is exact.

I think that if I had to approve stuff, that would be a job that I would end up putting off forever and it would impede people from having fun. So I think the best thing to do is to encourage folks to have fun and if somebody catches a mis-quote, then it might get corrected before it goes out.

So rather than hamper fun with a bunch of rules, I think the path is "have fun and make the best of it."

Thank you for explaining to all of us meme volunteers what you think on quoting! =)

Shawn, this means your meme is ready to have fun in the Meme Factory thread for people to post online! I'll try and find that thread with quotes from Paul so we have a quick reference to use. Then, as we find more quotes from Paul, we can revive that thread with more posts.

The thread was easy to find; hope nobody minds if we, meme factory volunteers, hijack this thread for integration into the process of making memes:

https://permies.com/t/16151/tnk/paul-quotes

So an update on how things can be efficient and fun for making memes so people can fit in wherever they like best:

1) Finding/making quotes are advised for posting in:
https://permies.com/t/16151/tnk/paul-quotes
2)Submitting Photos for use by meme volunteers:
https://permies.com/t/36922/tnk/Meme-Factory-Photo-Submissions
3)Making initial memes for critiques (the thread you currently are in)
4)Posting finalized memes for use by everyone:
https://permies.com/t/36914/tnk/Meme-Factory

Here's a meme made from a photo of the Wheaton Laboratories that was posted by Jocelyn Campbell.

I'm going to try to find a photo editing app that lets me shrink the text more on long photos.

This new one had been edited with InstaEdit+ . It is not capable of placing smaller text on long photos.

Judith, all three of your most recent memes look amazing! The flowers are beautiful!

Caleb, I love the pictures and the quotes you have chosen. I would like to suggest trying out if other colors contrast more with the background in the first meme; all three, I have a little trouble seeing the thinner text. The second and third are the easiest to read. I'm on my phone reading them, at the moment; if they are easy to read on a computer, go with it!

This does add to mind another good question, which mediums are the memes most likely to be seen on after posting? Phones? Computers? Tablets?

Please remember to post finalized memes under the Meme Factory Thread; thank you for taking the time to let the memes sit around in the Soundboard.

Here is a math-related permaculture meme that was inspired by Toby Hemenway's book, Gaia's Garden; essentially, the key to success in permaculture is to create connections and relationships. I thought this would be a little funny and still pique interest.

I love this thread... I'll be thinking about what I can add. I do know one thing I can add are ideas and insight into how OTHERS will see your meme. I have a particular talent for seeing things from many different perspectives. AND I make my family and myself CRAZY with all my "ideas"... so hopefully I can channel them to good use here.

I think the great thing about lots of different folks creating lots of different memes and putting them up for other Permies to copy is that if a meme catches some permie's interest/sense of humour, etc it will be more likely to catch their friends' also. If we all post the one's that we think are good, we'll be more likely to get our group of friends' attention. A couple of things to keep in mind. Jargon can help catch attention and make someone curious, but if it doesn't mean anything to the viewer they won't connect it... you had something in the "Stacking Functions" one about Zone 5 something.... I wasn't sure what you meant... now I get it - "wilderness" but most folks when they here Zone5 they think hardiness Zones. It helps to think about what your Cousin Zed who knows nothing about permaculture and is at level two on the Wheaton scale, would understand.

I think the best memes for our purposes will convey some actual tidbit of info or inspiration AND steer folks to permies. But they may never make it to permies... so let's give them enough to get them at least thinking about the actual concept in the brick we're pushing...

Also, if you get tons of upthumbs on a couple of the memes posted to the factory maybe we should think about a way to get them out to the general permies community - not everyone will check the factory page.

Kelly! You are just the person we've been waiting for! Please visit the Soundboard often to critique our memes before they are posted as finalized memes in the Meme Factory thread for the entire permies community to use and post. Especially, your ability to see from various perspectives will be extremely useful since we don't have a large test audience at the moment.

The best ideas I have so far of where memes spread the fastest are: Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Google+, and iFunny.

I'm just confused on how to lure people to the Meme Factory threads so that more people know these topics exist. I say "lure" for a reason because we'd have to be subtle about it as to not detract from the discussions going on elsewhere in the forums.

Also, Paul has already sent an email about this topic; I'm really not sure what we can do other than just continue as is and patiently wait for people to stumble onto this topic. We already have quite a few memes finalized and posted to the Meme Factory for use, though without a larger audience, the Soundboard's critiquing process is a little slow.

Yeah, that is why I'm very happy you've visited this topic; you said you have a penchant for perspectives, and that will be very valuable in critiquing our initial memes. I look forward to more of your critiques, Kelly.

I think it is best at this point to give it a while for it to percolate through to folks. After you've gotten 10 or 12 on the Meme Factory that have gotten 10 or more likes then there will be enough "good" ones - then we can make another push to tell folks about them.

And by good I mean ones that catch folks.... I know you're creating memes that mean something to you and are taking your time to create. So any comments I make are in the context of appreciating what you're doing and just trying to make it more accessible to folks. So post your memes to your page and if you get a lot of comments you could say something like "you can see and vote on more memes like these at (put link here to meme factory)."

Ok, I'm supposed to be getting the Farmers Market set up for today...gotta go.

sorry, one more time with this meme....I was thinking about what kelly said and trying to add a few more words to this one to see if it is a clearer message...mostly to add focus to the words 'permies.com' ..i am kind of stuck in the exercise of balancing a sixties style graphic both color and words...which dates my art major days
I wouldn't mind some input....too hot in the garden so am playing in the paint program.
