The Permaculture Student 1

The first installment in the Permaculture student series is the middle school volume. It is also for beginners of any age or for anyone wanting a simple, direct and academic reference for permaculture design science. It is a reference manual rather than a traditional textbook of units and assignments. It is modeled after and primarily sourced from Bill Mollison's Permaculture: A Designer's Manual with influences from Geoff Lawton, Elaine Ingham, Paul Wheaton, Sepp Holzer and Jeff Lowenfels. It is designed such that anyone can setup their site safely and begin their education in permaculture on a solid foundation based in science.

Blown away by the support: 35% in less than 24 hours! I'm so excited!! I can't wait to ship this out to everyone & finish the next two!

Translations: many have said that they think their country doesn't need a translation because English is so predominant, but many more are saying that they want it: it's country specific.

We are adding edits, but Italian and Polish are finished. I will keep looking for translators; I hope to have over 10 translations at least.

Thank you so much to the Permies community!!! YOU ARE LEADING IN CONTRIBUTIONS!!! 36% of donations & 38 individuals total! <3 <3 <3

YOU ROCK!! THANK YOU!!!

We are still only halfway there, but seeing as it is only the 2nd night, 54% of the way towards our goal is AMAZING!!! AMAZING!!!

I can't wait to share the books with you all! I can't wait to finish the next 2 volumes & have an entire curricular arc 6th-12th grade that connects to the 40+ nascent permaculture programs across the US. They will be able to start with Mollison's Permaculture: A Designer's Manual as freshman! I can't even imagine the kind of world they will envision & implement!!

I'm so excited! Please share with your friends & consider donating & getting yourself a copy of The Permaculture Student 1:

Matt, if you are looking for translators in Spain (it´s quite different Spanish than in the Americas!) I have several possibilities close-by and could put you in touch. Let me know how to contact you about this if that sounds like something worthwhile...

Supported!

I am totally with you on this approach Matt. Its fundamental that we talk to our children at a young age about the results of the choices we make in life. Teaching children to respect, care for and understand the world around them with the view that it is our planet that is ultimately keeping us all alive is vital! By raising children who intrinsically consider their impacts on others, before acting, we are instilling in them core values that can change our world for the better.

I only wish I had been taught at school level about these things. Just think of the good I could have done in the years I have wasted.

Good on you mate!

Count my contribution under the permies group. I found out about this project via the daily-ish email...the AWESOME power of the daily-ish email muh ah ah ah...sorry paul couldn't help myself.

This one was a no brainer once I saw the goal, the time line, and what was left to do. This came at a most fortuitous time really, my wife just started homeschooling our son (7). I am going to try and work this in some how.

1st Stretch Goal:
$11,000 - We will hire Wayne Fleming for more than 4 amazing drawings: a Microclimate example, a Sunpath Chart, a Keyline example connecting keypoint dams, & a Paddock shifting example.

I just posted this. I'll post others. I'm just teaching right now

WE DID IT!!! 117% FUNDED

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! All your support has been so amazing! I'm very excited for the STRETCH GOALS!!!

Keep spreading the campaign & donate if you have not. Right now we have 3 Permaculture Kickstarters going & all are getting attention.

Permaculture Chickens is now a STAFF PICK!! Permaculture Student is #4 in popularity under Publishing. If we can both get onto that main page, Kickstarter surfers will all see Permaculture twice on the Popular page. If the 3rd one gets on there... unforgettable.

STRETCH GOALS

$11,000 - We will hire Wayne Fleming for more amazing drawings: a Microclimate example, a Sunpath Chart, a Keyline example connecting keypoint dams, a Paddock shifting example & more! Check out Wayne's work here: http://www.waynefleming-illustrator.com/index.php

$15,000 - MORE ART! We will pack it in with art from Wayne Fleming! More animals, more designs, more examples!!

$20,000 - Digital animations online on our webpage & sent to you as digital downloads: trees & their energy transactions, trees & precipitation, Food Soil Web in MOTION!!, & more!! These animations will be part of your home collection of curriculum!

More stretch goals coming!

Anyway.... I'm so excited!! Everywhere I go people are getting excited about the Permaculture Student 1 too! I taught teachers all day today: permaculture education in a tech based common core setting was the focus of the morning and ending cheating, HW and grades was the afternoon in-depth session. Permaculture wove throughout the afternoon. Did you hear that a permaculture farm was in Martha Stewart magazine recently? My mom told me! This is the year - the tipping point!! To that end, I'm going to finish the 2nd & 3rd volumes (the high school volumes) this summer (or maybe earlier if we reach 50k I'll finish them this spring and just focus on writing full time from now on... or is that too audacious a goal? Our rate would put us there if didn't slow down). Just a thought! KEEP DONATING!!!

125% funded in 5 days!!! WE MADE OUR FIRST STRETCH GOAL!!! MORE ART FROM WAYNE!!!

The next STRETCH GOALS:

$15,000 - MORE ART from Wayne Fleming! The Workbook will have art instead of just charts and worksheets and it will be in COLOR.

$20,000 - A digital animation of the Food Soil Web in action that will be on Youtube, on the website & a download link to a digital download will be sent.

More stretch goals coming!

MY FELLOW PERMIES,

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING CRITICAL IN REACHING OUR GOAL SO FAST! PERMIES.COM STARTED THE FLOOD THIS WEEK!! 25% of the funding and 57 of the backers was Permies.com I'm sure more Permies found out via Facebook and came in that way, so it is likely much more than 25%.

SUPPORTERS CONTINUE TO GIVE FEEDBACK!!

If you haven't donated, please consider it, the books are only getting better as the stretch goals are reached - Hop on the bandwagon!

Hey! Cool to see the amazing success of your kickstarter, I look forward to see the result...

I'm at 55 now and consider helping you guys by stepping up to 120, but it seemes it's not both PDFs at 120 but it is at 55. Is it any way you could make 120 look more tempting?

A couple things on this:

- I can't change the rewards once someone has selected that reward.

- I can add things as part of Stretch Goals.

- I was and am still concerned with putting out a perfect PDF simply because it can instantly be shared anywhere and be a perfect copy and not a photocopy.

Your thoughts?

Ok, I see.

Well, top quality pdf would be preferable, for sure.

By having high quality pdf people could spread it far and wide and it could become the book everyone uses.

For my part, however, I'd rather buy the book than print it. I imagine the cost of getting it printed nicely wouldn't be much cheaper than getting a proper book.

My thoughts on this:

- If we are printing in this bulk format, I will be able to print at a high enough volume to get a better quality product that will last longer and be more valuable to more people over time than anything done on a home printer.

- I think it should be a good quality book that can ship and be used by multiple children in a school for several years and still look good. If we just used Inkjet printers and printed it out for every kid, it would be a larger carbon footprint over time. I'm not shipping from China just for this very reason. The energy audit on it doesn't play out if we are doing it in large batches.

I totally recognize and respect your need to feel low impact, but in this specific case, the volume outweighs it in practice.

WE ARE AT 154% $14,046!! WE ARE ABOUT TO HIT ANOTHER STRETCH GOAL!!!

That's right! At 15k we will add illustrations to the Workbook & print it in COLOR - this will be a significant upgrade to the book and it will be worth the extra pages & printing-in-color cost to drive engagement.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mattpowers/the-permaculture-student-1

IF YOU HAVEN'T DONATED, YOUR DONATIONS WILL ADD VALUE TO EVERYONE ELSE'S & YOUR OWN PERK!!

No better time than now to hop on the bandwagon.

To all of you that are sitting on the fence, I'd suggest jump down and sign up for a book or three.

Having been a part of editing this book I happen to sit on inside information that this is a great introductory book not only for kids but all ages. I have many times wondered which book to get a bunch of to use while teaching, now I know.

As for the product I would say there's many ways to skin a cat and Matt Powers does it quite proficiently and beautifully. Or as the living legend Mike Oehler says about it: "I am awed by the concept and delivery. Truly a book for the times. "

And if you do happen to have $500 to spend, know that this book delivers and can become a part in the positive tipping point if it reaches enough kids.

We are ecstatic about the response to our Kickstarter & want to bring as much permaculture education as possible to the world especially where it is needed most. To that end I've been brainstorming Stretch Goals that make the most sense (taking some time to do it), so I hope you all like them:

$20,000 - Website Design & Hosting - Making The Permaculture Student available to buy online & for us to give away free stuff too!

$30,000 - Book Donations to Permaculture Sites & Areas of Need - Help us donate books to permaculture education, disaster relief, and aid relief sites globally to provide free copies to children & families in need.

With these goals we can reach the most people & provide the most benefit to those people. I just imagine a family in need exploring a permaculture demonstration site in Saudi Arabia or Jordan and being able to leave with a copy of The Permaculture Student 1 of their own and in their language. I can see that family cherishing the information inside, much as I have cherished all the feedback and help I've received in writing these two books from experts all over the world.

I can't wait to share it all with you. My team is eager & ready to finish strong & pass along something amazing. Since the Kickstarter has begun and editing with Rosemary Morrow, Elaine Ingham, Eivind W. Bjørkavåg, Paul Wheaton & a team of Permies, & Danial Lawton, the book has expanded 7 pages. With all the names added to it as well, it's gone over 90 pages in length! I expect it to break over 100 pages once we add in all the art from Wayne Fleming. Truly it is amazing and humbling to see the refinement of the product as part of the process of support being gathered. It is more "our" product now than "my" product; it is ours globally as well. Thank you so much for making this book so amazing.

Another review as well came last night:

"This book fills a gaping niche in permaculture education--it addresses the basics without being overwhelming, and I will use it to teach my children." - Neal Spackman, TwoVisionsPermaculture.com

Have a great week!

Matt. Thank you so much for making this book and taking the leap to put it out into the world. We desperately need books like this and people like you. I am happy to support this project and look forward to using this book to teach permaculture. I am about to go back to school to get a degree in environmental management education, to fulfill a calling to teach children permaculture, so to say this project is inspiring would be an understatement. I have been thinking a lot about how to attract high level funding to permaculture education projects, things like government grants, non-profit foundations, or donations from the 128 billionaires who have pledged to give away the majority of their wealth to philanthropy. http://givingpledge.org/ I think teaching tools like this book are a big part of attracting that kind of attention to permaculture, then we can show the world what can really be done on a very large scale.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Your contributions are amazing! I can't wait to share this great work with you! I've been promoting it and spreading it through social media, just as many of you are too!! I see your support - THANK YOU!! In the past 12 hrs, 16 Permies have donated!! Thank you!!!

With your help through a mention from Paul Wheaton's Daily-ish Email, we hit 20k! We can put up our books, translations, freebies & more on our own website! Thank you!!

ALSO!!! Diego Footer invited me to speak at PV2... the last day of the Kickstarter campaign!!! It will the best end cap on the entire experience. It's a 5 minute talk on permaculture youth education: http://www.permaculturevoices.com/pv2/pv2-the-talk-topics/ Can't wait to share & spark ideas to take off everywhere spreading permaculture through kids

Keep spreading permaculture & our Kickstarter! Let's make the 30k Stretch Goal &

Have a great weekend!!!

8 SCHOOL SETS ARE RESERVED!!! (200 kids will have their own Permaculture Student 1 in schools this coming fall!!!)
406 backers!!
267% funded!!
94 permies.com backers (and likely many of the 101 facebookers were permies too)!!!

7 DAYS TO GO!!

Help us reach more communities, home/private/public/charter schools, families, children & policymakers.

WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!! The huge presence of permaculture on Kickstarter with the speed at which and amount given are serious, loud messages to policymakers throughout the US. Between just the 3 of us, we've reaching thousands upon thousands of people (there were other permacutlure projects on there too, so the effect is greater). This will not go unnoticed. The word permaculture is going to become a household word this year is my prediction. Let's spread the word as far and wide as we can

Hey Everybody-
There's only about 1 day (26 hours) left before this super kickstarter gets finished. It fills a nitch that is currently unfilled.

Rudy Valvano gave the supporters an awesome challenge.

$4000 needed to reach $30,000 with over 400 backers. I challenge everyone who is getting a physical copy to add $10 to your pledge to cover postage. Let me go first.

The $30,000 value isn't randomly chosen. There is a stretch goal at $30k where Matt Powers said he would donate copies of the books and workbooks to permaculture sites and areas in need that wouldn't be able to afford the materials. This is a noble goal!

I'm giving the same challenge to all of us permies out there! I've already upped my donation. How about you? Or if you haven't already donated, please donate now! Let's follow the 3rd permaculture principle of giving back the surplus! We can do this!

--matt

Hi Everybody,
My name is Boriana and I live in Toronto. My kids and their friends go to the Equinox Alternative primary school. My mother volunteers in a Saturday Chilean school, heavily focused on sustainability.
I just got certified as a Permaculture designer by Geoff Lawton and the World became The Perfect Place!!!
The teachers' interest in Equinox and the Chilean school in Permaculture is so inspiring and I've been working on a few small projects with different grades...All the "lessons" I had came out with I have tried to tailor from my perm lectures and have been really difficult to figure out what would be kids appropriate...
Any help about curriculum, text - books of any kind and videos will be beyond appreciated.
Is "The permaculture Student ..." going to be available in any other form than learning on location?
Please, HELP, as we are deciding on the content for the coming school year now.
Absolutely admiring you, all
Boriana

Yes indeed it is

The digital versions are going through final approvals & I will send them out to all Kickstarter backers & then make them available on:

ThePermacultureStudent.com

Print will take some more time to print, ship to me & then reship to everyone else, so if you can use the digitals while you wait, you will have the books within 2 wks at most.
