Quoting someone within a permies thread

Sometimes we need to quote others... both directly quoting within a thread and also referencing snippets from off these forums. The forum software has a useful quotes feature that helps us to keep clear who is saying what and to apply attribution to comments when applicable.

Notice in this picture that the quoted snippet of text is on a white background, clearly different from the response on the normal salmon pink colour. (What is with the pink anyway? Never really thought about until just now!). Also notice that the person being quoted is clearly identifiable. "Charlotte Anthony wrote:"

To achieve this you simply use the quote button located at the top right of every post. On the post that you want to quote you simply click the button

Now it starts a new response comment, containing the text to be quoted with all the proper tags in place. You can edit this, and it is usual to cut down quotes to just the pertinent part you are responding to.

Notice that the tags are place with the original posters name already in place.

When you click the quote button it starts a new reply post containing a quote of the text. You can edit this to just leave the bit you are interested in. It also includes the poster

Quoting sources from outside of the permies forums
This method can also be used for quoting multiple people in one reply

If you have a snippet of text that is not yours, but you would like to quote then you should:

  • Start a new thread or reply, as normal
  • Cut and paste the material you are quoting into the reply box
  • Highlight the test you want to be marked as a quote
  • Click the quote button (6th grey button from the left in the tool bar)

  • This generates the "quote" tags, but without the name attribution.

You can make multiple quotes in one reply using this method.

Linking back to the original source
If you are quoting from off the forums it is helpful to provide a link back to the original text or web page.

  • Copy the web address of the page you want to link
  • Click the grey "url" button in the tool bar
  • paste in the address to the box that pops up
  • In the next box put a description that tells people what the link leads to eg "Joe Bloggs blog on permaculture"

Quoting More than One Person in a Post, by Name
This is for when you want to quote multiple people and still use the name attribution.

*Start a new thread or reply, as normal
*Cut and paste the material you are quoting into the reply box (you can do this by scrolling down below your reply and copying and pasting from the posts below in the "Review Posts" section)
*Highlight the test you want to be marked as a quote
*Click the quote button (6th grey button from the left in the tool bar)
*Place your mouse after the first "quote", and type "=name of person." Or, you can copy their name from the "Review message" area, and then paste their name area there after "=" if you're afraid (like I am) of spelling it wrong.

(I just wanted to say, please feel free to delete or rework my post. I love what you've done here, and thought maybe I could add a little to it. You're tutorials are better than mine, though!)

This is another explanation of quoting, and I hope it is helpful.

I'll try to explain this differently. I disabled BB code in this post so that you can see the code you need in your post.
This is what quoting is supposed to look like. You have [quote=Name of Person you are quoting] at the beginning of the quote and [/quote] at the end of the quote.

So, your quote comes out to look like this all together.

[quote=name of person you are quoting] stuff that you're quote [/quote]

Dave is also showing what happens if you accidentally click the "Disable BB Code in this message" check box.  For instance if you're trying to click the smiley button and miss.  Not that I've ever done that....

Unfortunately I think that when you make that mistake, it carries on through the rest of the thread for other people.

Looks like the disable BB code does not carry on for future replies, but the smilies do

You will always be treated with dignity. Now, strip naked, get on the probulator and hold this tiny ad:
