So Fantastic Fungi is in the lead - but it's behind a registration wall.  How do people feel about giving foodrevolution.org their email adresses?

Behind Fantastic Fungi is a 3-way tie.

Personally I'm fine with giving foodrevolution.org my email address to see the movie, but then they already have it since I've been following their work for years already.  I've found it to be a quality organization.  In general they are oriented around whole food plant based health and eating, but I don't feel like they are militant that everyone must act like they do.

Edited to add that with the Food Revolution you can always unsubscribe from emails with no problems.

And the winner is . . .

Fantastic Fungi!

Seems like the email registration link is straightforward enough, and it's playing great on my end.

Link to watch the film (expires after this weekend!): https://fungi.foodrevolution.org/?uid=13&oid=3&affid=405&sub1=pmnt

Post-movie discussion can happen at this thread: https://permies.com/wiki/188888/Fantastic-Fungi

I'm watching this because the link worked and I've got it all set and ready to go--links do not work equally around the world.  So I was happy to see this was available to me.

Glad to hear it worked for you, Melissa.  What did you think?  Discussion is happening here: https://permies.com/wiki/188888/Fantastic-Fungi
(geeky side-note: I think it's kinda cool that the thread ID # for the film thread here on permies is 188888.  Kinda looks like 1 and a bunch of infinities, which kinda makes me think of the unity and neverendingness of the fungal kingdom.)

Poor Man's Poll for this weekend's movie selection!  If you're new to this oporation, here is how it works:

Let's vote on a movie via a little poor man's poll in the comments below, and then I'll update this thread with a link to the publicly available film of our choosing.

Then comes the fun part - we all get to come back to the movie thread and talk about the movie!  Kinda like a book club, but one where you don't have to read.  (Except then you do have to read to participate in the discussion part on the forum, but I digress . . .)

Now, technically speaking, one could watch the movie at any time.  And I guess that's okay too, but there's something kinda magical about the thought of all of us popping our own popcorn, firing up our own viewing accouterments, and letting 'er rip . . . together.

This might be the link to watch the documentary about the restoration of the loess plateau.  A landscape as degraded as any ever was, restoration project funded by the world bank.  An incredible story, blowing sands to orchards in 15 years.

There’s not a lot of specific strategies.  One I remember has to do with slope of the land:  “steeper than x, no farming” kind of thing, or something close.  Accountability played a role too, I think…..

I find it heartening, that results could be so dramatic, so quickly, especially nowadays

Christmas time and  even though Santa Claus is  misinformation and not fact checked, here is my proposal for the next viewing:

Tokyo Godfathers ENG SUB

It is an Anime by the late Satoshi Kon. It has LGBTQ characters, suspense, thrills.

A lost baby is returned to its mother BUT she is not its real mother
and plans to kill herself and the baby that night. How will the three
now separated homeless individuals pull off a rescue? Nail-biting tension.

I first saw it on Youtube but that is gone.

edit to update results:
And the winner is:  Akira Kurosawa's Dersu Uzala!

Head on over to https://permies.com/wiki/189965/Movie-Dersu-Uzala-Akira-Kurosawa to watch the film (subtitles and dubbed versions available).  Don't forget to let us know what you thought of the film!  Did you like it?  How did you find it related to permaculture?  Did you throw tomatoes at the screen?  Inquiring minds want to know . . .

original message:

We missed last week.  Sheep and goats need extra attention, and we just couldn't get away for movie time.

Thinking we may be able to pull it off this week - anyone wanna join?  We usually put it on at about 7 central, but you could theoretically watch it whenever.

Let's vote on a movie via a little poor man's poll in the comments below, and then I'll update this thread with a link to the publicly available film of our choosing.  Click thumbs up for the one you wanna watch tonight.  (The best of the rest will be up for vote again in the weeks to come.)

Then comes the fun part - I'll post a link to the movie thread, so we can all watch it and talk about the movie!  Kinda like a book club, but one where you don't have to read.  (Except then you do have to read to participate in the discussion part on the forum, but I digress . . .)

The Irish traditional crafts looks great, but it seems like the only way I can find the full length video is to order the 14 DVD set for 149 of some currency? Dollars? considering the reliability of the post around here we could schedule that for April 18th!
Same with Broken Limbs, it seems there's an free educational streaming option, but I still need to enter a credit card number even though the total is $0.00?
As for Eugenio Monesma my husband absolutely loves him so I've seen a lot of his stuff--in Spanish. The English language stuff seems to be mostly 30 minutes or less, but I'm game.

It is not that I have something against watching the videos above. But when I hear movie night I always think about movie Dersu Uzala.

I think it fits well to permies. It is about man who lives alone in the Siberian forests at the beginning of  20th century when he meets bunch of soldiers mapping the area. He lives and travels with them some time.

It is in original Russian with English subtitles. Directed by Akira Kurosawa in 1975.

Here is imdb for more details.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071411

What I really like about the movie, you learn how to make a shelter fast so that you can survive Siberian windy night.  There are examples of other forgotten knowledge, which people used to know, but don't anymore.
