I used vinegar, a plastic bag, rubber band, and  a toothbrush. It soaked for an hour.

The showerhead at my parents' house hadn't been taken care of for a while... I let it soaked in a bucket of vinegar for a few hours, then I cleaned it with an old toothbrush.

I used white vinegar in a bag to clean the shower head. It was on there for about eight hours.

Utilizing a ziploc bag full of white distilled vinegar and a hair tie, the showerhead was soaked overnight (Partially because I fell asleep zzz...) and then scrubbed lightly with a crochet cotton scrubber. You can see the white calcium nodes that were blocking some of the sprayers in the first picture and they are gone in the third. Running water through it confirmed improved function.

Wasn't that bad, but the flow seemed less than optimal.  Soaked in vinegar for 30 mins or so.  Brushed with an old toothbrush -- that got gunk out of the inside, too.  Nice and clean.
