So I posted a joke video of a girl impersonating a political figure, and someone gives me an apple core?  There have been times I thought the moderation was a little heavy-handed, but this time I think it's ridiculous.

Here is a link to the post I made with the horribly offensive video of an 8 year old girl making fun of AOC: AOC impersonator.

This is a heavily moderated site and proud of it.

There are lots of places on the internet with light moderation.  Permies has the flavour it does because of the hard work of the staff.

I'll look at the post in question but in the end, any staff is free to give out an apple core for whatever reason they see fit.  It could be they didn't think the post fit with the goals of this site or don't share your sense of humour.

To start with, the post only has a link.  No text.  I doubt many people will click on that as clicking on unknown links is the fastest way to kill a computer.

To improve your post, add a few sentences describing what you're linking to and how it is relevant.

Maybe that's the source of the apple cores?

The cider press is called Cider Press because making cider chews up a lot of apples.

I tried to watch the video but I got bored because I didn't understand what it was supposed to make fun of.  Some sort of Pop culture reference I guess.  Life is too short and I have mangelwurzels to plant.

I'll do my best not to waste any more of your time, or post joke videos.

I came here because i watch all posts in this forum.   And concerns about this sort of thing seems to be something i need to be a part of.

Researching ....    apple cores ... cider press ...

Raven beat me to it:

I post stuff there and people give ME apple cores.

I just pretty much stay out of the cider press.  We provide the cider press because people just HAVE TO talk about this stuff with this group.   But ...   you just gotta expect to lose apples there.  Which is why it is called the cider press.

Trace,  I like to simplify things. Someone probably gave you 10 apples over time and took one away. You can think someone gave you a core or you can think "yay! Someone gave me 9 apples".

The number of apples you have tells me your an asset here. Take pride in that. The core is probably a friendly reminder to keep in mind the reason of the purpose for these forums. I became a better member when i was able to shake off things that i previously took personal and focus on why i was here- learn and teach good things. It took my dad on his death bed for me to come to the conclusion that i don't want to look for things to be angry about anymore.

I understand exactly what you're saying, but I don't think I'm looking for things to be angry about.  I think taking 3 apples from me for posting a video of an 8 year old girl doing an impersonation of a political figure is excessive though.  Regardless, what's past is past.  Thank you for giving me a different perspective to consider.  I'm sorry to hear about your Dad.

I would guess that if the same was done for the other political party, the same would happen. Politics and religion tend to come with a lot emotion from both sides. I cannot speak to why it happened but i can see that it would happen with either of these subjects regardless of party/religious affiliation.

At the moment, Trace has a 13% apple to post ratio.

That's exceptional!

There's no hard and fast rule why people give out apples or cores.  It could be as simple as someone disagreeing with the content.  Or maybe they didn't like that someone put toxic lipstick on a child.  Or maybe they didn't like a mysterious link without any text.  I don't know.  It's entirely up to the individual.

But it's an interesting thread.  Like most of the world - and quite possibly most of the readers here on permies, I had no idea about this person or what a Green Deal thingy was.  I learned a lot from the thread already.  This woman has some neat words - but now I want to see what this Green Deal looks like in action.  Maybe this thread can transform into something that people will stumble upon while searching the internet and it will infect more brains with permaculture.

R, the Green New Deal has some really great goals.  Whether any of it will be enacted is going to be largely dependent on the actual policies that are put on the table to reach the goals.  The goals in general line up well with permaculture thinking in my mind.

I didn't watch the video, cause watching videos isn't of much interest to me, especially not political videos nor comedy. However, I did review how staff and readers interacted with the video. The post attracted a number of apple cores from a number of moderators. No moderator gave more than one apple core. In other words, a strong consensus that it wasn't the type of post that fits in with the "be nice" goals of this forum.

Deciding how to deal with the post burned through hours of staff time. To my way of thinking, that in itself would be sufficient reason for an apple core, regardless of content. I personally would rather be making pickled asparagus than fussing about a video that I won't even see.

@ Trace - just to add one more perspective, I tripped across the video shortly after you posted it. As a Canadian, I had no idea what that the initials referred to a US Gov't Official. In other words, for the sake of the *many* non-US citizens, giving more background about your goal in posting it, your own opinion on the subject and why you hold those views, and being *absolutely clear* that you're posting a satirical, controversial video would have been very helpful.

In fact, we have a thread for jokes. I recently posted some of the lyrics from a song, thinking that the entire song might upset people. Being in the jokes thread, a fellow permie actually found a video of it and posted it and clearly people were able to see the humour and didn't get upset. Context is sometimes everything. If people had reacted differently, I would have done as you did and edited the post down to "bad idea". As is, you have at least raised an issue in politics which may have a substantial impact on my neighbors to the south and things like this do tend to trickle north.  If you want to actually do things on a personal level to mitigate global climate change, I suggest you read the book "Drawdown - the most comprehensive plan ever proposed to reverse global warming".
