When we had first installed our woodstove (standard, not RMH), it took me a while to learn this. Fierce 'Alberta Clippers' from Canada (not pointing fingers,.....just sayin'... ;-) ) were toying with our uninformed decision to place the chimney on the north side of the house and up through the eave of a steep roofline. The downward pressure in the chimney column, moreso when cold.....terrible with the wind, was finally rectified with a venturi type chimney cap. Not a complete solution, but that was a few decades ago and continued forest growth of the surrounding yard makes the wind less brutal and fire-starting more predictable. More to the point....just by opening the inside insulated door a crack with only the storm door to block the wind, the pressure is sufficiently relieved that it nearly completely permits reversal of the air column in the chimney and the fire begins roaring.
