I've been trying to re embed three videos in this post https://permies.com/t/40/15888/dyeing/fiber-arts/growing-harvesting-natural-dye-plants#331049
that were embedded originally.  The code is correct and I've checked to be sure the videos are still available.

I copied and pasted one to another post of mine with an embedded video and it worked...for some reason it won't in the post I linked to?

All of the setting are the same, etc.

There must be something I'm missing or my post has bugs

I'm going to try to embed them in my next post here.

Judith, I tried to fix this for you and I can't make it work either.

I tried this one

by going to youtube and copying the "Copy video URL"
and it just doesn't work for me either. I tried using the "youtube" button on the reply screen.

Maybe you need to contact youtube to see if there is a problem with the address.

thank you Anne!
the odd thing is that I was able to embed one in another post of mine that already had an embedded video?  I'll try to go back there and do it and then link here.

I checked and rechecked all of the settings and they were the same...except I think I must be missing something?

Your thread is fixed the best I can do.

Two videos are now showing with the one I tried as a link.

If I try the trick I did here it just messes everything up again.

My best advice would be to leave that post as it is now.

here's a link to the post where I tried to embed these three...the first video is already there.  https://permies.com/t/40/15888/dyeing/fiber-arts/growing-harvesting-natural-dye-plants#331049
I tried several times with the code just as it is above and then tried removing the bit on the first one that Pearl suggested and  all three appeared embedded.

I didn't do anything to the second two just removed  #t=33 from the first one....I did try this in this thread and it didn't work...will try in a reply below once again.

EDIT:  and it worked!!!

Pearl you are a genius and now please explain why this 'repairs' all three of them when I only changed the first one?

code with '#t=33' removed from first video's code....

Thank you Anne!  I will go back there and see.

I'm not sure what fixed it as we were working on them at the same time?

I'll try removing the bit that I did here and see if that fixes the third one in my thread.

I was able to get all three embedded in this post https://permies.com/t/37159/dyeing/fiber-arts/Indigo-blue-growing-harvesting-processing#330424

When I went to the post in question though, https://permies.com/t/40/15888/dyeing/fiber-arts/growing-harvesting-natural-dye-plants#331049  I saw that you got two of them to 'embed' Anne and when I tried to do the same code alteration that worked above it caused all of them to revert to visible code so I removed the one that was causing the trouble and the other two are showing again.

But all three are showing in my post above just fine....

I'll probably have to think out loud in this thread off and on today as I love a good mystery...just ignore :)

got all three!

in this post https://permies.com/t/40/15888/dyeing/fiber-arts/growing-harvesting-natural-dye-plants#331049

I copied and pasted the code from all three at once from the post above where they embedded correctly and deleted what was in the post previously.

still would like to understand what happened and why that first one's code would effect three separate youtube links?

The words I use for what I think you were fighting with is what I call carryover cooties.
The post you were copying from had HTML disabled, so when you copied it, you also got it's formatting, and that broke them all. Me and Anne were both copying it off YOUR post, that did NOT have it checked, so WE weren't getting carryover cooties.

Normally when I see this go bad like this it's the disable BB code bit, but disable HTML does it too.

For future reference for anyone reading this:
On your post as you write it, at the bottom there are check boxes that say
Disable HTML in this message
Disable BB Code in this message

You want them NOT CHECKED
When you quote someone else (including yourself in another post) you carry over those settings, and they break things in weird ways.
If you don't have a need for the settings, ALWAYS make sure they are not checked, especially if you quote someone.
If you don't know if you need them, you don't. They are rarely needed, and mostly break stuff, including OTHER people's posts if they quote YOU.

:D

EDIT: I was corrected. HTML being checked could not have done this. But it's still always good to make sure they are both NOT CHECKED on your posts, as they don't need to be and can cause issues   :)

You want them NOT CHECKED

The posts that worked to embed though all had HTML checked including the one above

I'm still confused then.

I did try unchecking many million tries ago and it still didn't work.

I think I'm being dense by now though.

What seemed to make the difference was removing that bit of code from the first video link...see post above where all three are happily embedded.

EDIT I only unchecked HTML after someone mentioned that to try...it was checked when I posted those videos.

This post I just quoted by you had HTML checked too.  Always wants to be unchecked.

The timestamp was part of it. But you said you removed that and it still didn't work.
Now I'm tangled up too, there were PMs and posts, and I had them open and you did...
How about we settle for "Always make sure those boxes are NOT checked" and I'm glad it works, however it did, and call it a win, if a puzzling one

I always keep "Disable HTML in this message" checked.

There is almost no html code a regular poster would need to use.  It's the people who make the fancy promotional threads that uncheck that button.
This is because it's super easy to make html mistakes which can throw a thread out of action for days.

Here's the first video with the timestamp.

I'm grabbing the link from the "share" button rather than the url bar at the top of the page.

Note: "Disable HTML in this message" is checked in all my posts!

I don't think that is the problem.

I suspect that Youtube changed their url tracking system to somehow add a character or something our system isn't used to.

HTML = pointy bracket code
BB = square bracket code.

Just about everything we do has square brackets.  All the buttons at the top of the page make square bracket code.

I didn't see any pointy brackets in the post that wasn't working, so I think we can rule this out.

Since html code can be a huge mess, I suggest keeping the Disable HTML box checked.  Especially for those of you who like emoji.

Yes, it was copied from the link bar at the top of the browser.  That 'all sorts of information' part must explain why, when I removed that bit of code (#t=33) from the first video link it worked? but why was the code in the first video keeping the other two from embedding? and when removed they all worked?

It was a post from 2014.  I've been embedding videos that way since 2012 or so, copying and pasting the URL line into the Youtube box...do you suppose there are more with that glitch or is this a random 'might happen' thing?

I'm willing to let some things be a mystery but I'm not quite there yet

I have been browsing old threads of mine and did find a couple missing videos, not missing for the same reason as above but still needed fixing.
Used the 'share' button at youtube and it worked perfectly...I've seen that button but always thought it was to share on facebook or some other social media so never used it.

yes! although I didn't go back and replace links with the code in the 'share' button I did find it and am using it from now on.

What did work was removing a bit of code as explained above and for some reason that allowed all three to embed...I didn't make any changes to the others, it just allowed all three to embed once that was removed.

There were three of us working on them off and on and maybe overlapping so might have been something someone else did but they are in place now.

The 'share' button is so simple I'm not sure why I never tried it...

Thanks!
