I have been loving hand sewing lately. Even with my arthritis, I've been having fun making small projects. But once I get to something large like clothing, it just hurts too much.
So I read about sewing clamps and how this is supposed to help. So I thought, why not? It's worth a try.
If you try a sewing bird or even a mocking sewing bird, let me know.
Hello! I recommend a piece of leather for protecting the table. You could double it if it is thin leather. The leather will have better grip than the cardboard.

This is what I'm going to do. Great minds think alike!

I looked at using a sewing bird, but I’m one of those people who sew away from themselves. Instead, I take my tailor’s ham, place it in my lap or on the table, and pin the fabric to it. I can then tension it away from myself and sew merrily along. Pretty sure I adopted this technique from Bernadette Banner.
I don't know why I struggle with hand sewing. I was working on a seam today and it's taking almost an hour per foot of stitching. Dug out my sewing bird and suddenly sewing is so fast and beautiful! It makes such a huge difference to how my hands handle the fabric.
Anyway, I had so much joy, I made a quick video for you
I liked your idea and video so I bought a sewing bird and clamped it to my sewing machine cover so it is close by. It makes me sew happy! Very handy for holding items so I can mend without my hand aching. Thank you R Ranson for sharing this info.
Look what I found on facebook marketplace - some sort of sewing duck!
Maybe not quite the same as a sewing bird, but it seems to have a loop on the back I can put a string on then I can tie it somewhere the right sort of distance away from me.
