I picked up a 60 yr old X-Acto wood carving set for $5 on ebay. I have yet to discover what most of these blades are for- even got the instructional book but it really had no instructions. All were absolutely dull. But, I sharpened the little scorp/spoon blade and it works great!  I can recognize a plane and little saw and a couple of blades.... but some are a mystery.  Can anyone list all the blades and tell me what they are for?

thats a very nice kit.
you just use what works best for whatever project you might be doing.
back in the 50's 60's 70's model building was a hobby that probably millions enjoyed. model making like , ships, airplanes, railroad, cars, buildings and architecture, rockets, etc. you know, back when you could buy a chemistry set at sears and roebuck, Montgomery ward, the local hardware store or hobby shop that included hazardous and deadly elements and chemicals.
Excel has given X-acto a run for the money and probably offers more knife or hobby sets than X-acto currently offers.

I agree that is a nice set.

Much nicer than the ones I am familiar with.

I suspect that one is used to carve furniture and other ornament pieces.

I f nothing else you might try those on some pumpkins in the fall.

the silver thing on top with handle on each side is called a spoke shave.
each of the cutters on either side of that would fit into a handle for making grooves or hollowing something out

A form of these kits still exist today, as my son has one (probably 10 years old though). His doesn't have a spoke shave.

The round blade is for carving spoons.

Got one in the 1970s for Christmas from my older sister. Still have it, still use it. Mine is less fancy than that one with fewer tools. Very useful thing to have around.

I'm all tasted up for a BLT! This tiny ad wants a monte cristo!
