2018 rocket oven kickstarter support

if you have any trouble getting any of the kickstarter candy, there might be some helpful clues in this thread.  And you can post any questions in this thread.  

When you are logged in you will see a link called "my stuff" at the top of every page.  If you click on that, it will give you a list of all the things you have so far.  This link should do the same thing (maybe bookmark it?)

When sending out the surveys, some people have the option of getting the physical DVD, but might not want the physical dvd.   In past years, we just asked people to put in "X" for the address and that seemed to be plenty good enough.  This year, thanks to the help of some of our backers, we came up with something a bit more:


   X --  please don't ship anything


   PIE  --  instead of shipping me stuff, please give me permies.com PIE which comes with a collection of goodies.   US people get two pieces of PIE ($6 value),  and non-US people get 12 pieces of PIE ($30 value)


   WDG  --  (non-US folks only)   instead of shipping me stuff, please give me the World Domination Gardening 3-DVD set as HD Streaming ($28 value).  


Currently, PIE includes a bunch of free stuff, a peek at several chapters of my upcoming book, vendor discounts, forum super powers (TWO thumbs up, and thumbs down and others), and if you see a good post, you could give them your pie.  Plus, we'll see if we can find a few things to put into the secret PIE forum to make it worth even more.

Keep in mind that the way kickstarter is handling stuff, people in the US are charged an extra five bucks for shipping, and people outside the US are charged an extra $25 for shipping.  So we are trying to come up with goodies to mitigate that charge.  

Of course, if you selected the rather clever, last minute thing of "virgin islands" then you already paid $0 in shipping and whatever you put for your address will be ignored.

Atc/pdc as streaming. How does that work? Thought it was dvd, but this is ok if i can make it work . I would use a tablet(non apple)

That would be a stack of 100 dvds.  The cost to print the DVDs would be staggering.  

This will be provided as HD Streaming.   And will come with an option to upgrade to "tiny download" or "HD download".

If we stop after 1 hour will it restart in same place next day? If not, will the upgrade do that?

Will it buffer , upgrade wont'?

This is new territory for me.

You will have access to something like 80 videos.   Not sure if it keeps track of stopping points in each video.

I think you are the sixth person to point that out.  

I hope everybody is complaining to kickstarter about this.  

For now, the most important thing is that I cannot process this now.   I can only process this after kickstarter is done fiddling with things.  

I would like to ask that you wait until the the "en masse" part is over.   After all, we make everything super freaky cheap because we are able to process en masse.  Once the en masse part is over, please post to this thread and I will make sure that you get sorted out.  

For now, please hassle kickstarter for recording your stuff wrong - it sounds like there is something definitely broken in their stuff.  Maybe they can update the fiddly bits they are fiddling with?

I purchased the PDC and ATC level as a birthday present for my husband. I selected PIE in place of shipping the DVD in the survey. It doesn't really matter if his goodies are sent to my email address or to his, but I would like for the PIE to be added to his permies account rather than mine. His account is registered under jvanmeter83@gmail.com if that is possible. Also I wanted the gapper fee stretch goal to be in his name.

I am no expert on kickstarter, but I had the concern that has happened to you and sent Paul a question about how to change from the $25 level to the $40 glory glory level.  He was not sure, so I took the safe approach and canceled the original support and then added a new one at the higher level.  Having canceled I realized that I had not needed to cancel a it gives the option to  change the pledge level.

I suspect that you changed your support amount on the first part of the page, which apparently does not also change the rewards that you receive.  Thus was my suspicion and the reason that I queried Paul.  We will know for next time.  Unfortunately I do not remember the sequence of clicks and prompts to accomplish the change of commitment or I would reiterate it here.  To be safe you can always simply cancel and resub at the new level.

I was excited to finally support one of your kickstarter, I think you mad the candy really attractive this go around
I almost want to say I got the most of the 4dvd rmh set as digital version for 80 dollar level, plus sooo much more, I'm personally very excited for the physical DVD and hope that I did everything right via kickstarter to receive that part of my goodies(I think I did)
The secret permits forum(that I previously didn't know existed haha) is also something I look forward to, can't wait to start going through some of the goodies!

After several attempts to submit this issue to Kickstarter support (the 'submit' function apparently was being overworked this morning) I was able to at least put the question on them. I suppose I should have realized that the issue was on their end in the first place.

A lot of things in there that are not what I was expecting.  

We make the price for stuff super low because we can process all the things en masse.  

The pie is easy - we give you the pie, and then once you have it, you can give it to anybody you want.  

The gapper fee is easy too - we sort that out when he is about to come this way!

Umm, was i supposed to have stuff in there from the last kickstarter that i pledged on still? Its empty.

I searched for your name and for your email address in my previous kickstarter (PDC+ATC video).   No matches.  And we just started doing this with the last kickstarter.  Might it have been a previous kickstarter?

You most likely used the wrong method of upgrading. You increased your dollar value rather than selecting a different reward.

Not that Kickstarter shouldn't make the accurate path more obvious.

(I started pledged at the ATC level and adjusted to ATC+PDC during the dehydrator plans push so I know what I'm talking about.)

That being said Paul appears to be making it right.

You backed the kickstarter at the $1 level.   You will be getting a LOT of stuff .... 10 microdocs.  All as streaming.  

You will get an email for each one.   And if you ever wish to see them all, every time you log in to permies, you will see a link at the top of every page that says "my stuff" - click on that and you will see all of the videos.  As the years pass and you support more kickstarter and buy more stuff through the digital market, that list will grow and grow.  

This just in from Kickstarter support: "Kickstarter does not actually have a function for "stretch" or "add on" rewards. While a project creator is free to work out arrangements with backers on a case-by-case basis, be advised that there is no protection in place if the creator or backer choose to do so - as there is no record on Kickstarter.

If the creator offered any type of add on reward or other arrangement, you will need to reach out to them directly to see how this portion of your reward will be handled."

That being said Paul appears to be making it right.

I don't recall seeing that opportunity.... all I remember is an "increase your pledge" choice. But I may have missed something. I hope this doesn't turn into a big headache for Paul considering there may be many like myself.

I'm guessing that I just raised my pledge amount assuming that'd take me to that pledge level.... obviously didn't.

I am 99% sure at the screen where you raised your pledge, you were inside a list of all the rewards.

Instead of changing the dollar value inside the old reward you want to click on the reward you want to change to.

X = no thanks don't want to appear in any credits

I think the credits stuff you can just leave blank.  

Kickstarter will require you to fill out the address stuff - hence the "x".

But, yes, if you leave the credits field blank, we won't put anything in.  Basically, kickstarter gives us a spreadsheet.  We then take all the answers in a column and put that into the videos.  If there is nothing there, then nothing goes in.

I think this problem has nothing to do with stretch goals (and I never offered "add on" stuff).  It has everything to do with changing a pledge level.   So that particular support person appears to be dodging the issue.

I wonder if there is enough complaining to kickstarter, then they might make it so that if a person pledges $50, but they have selected a reward that is $20, then during this two week span of time kickstarter can give users the option of changing their reward choice.

I'll do what I can.  I figure that there are always about 40 people that will need a bit more of something.   That's fine.

I am a bit nervous about the idea that a thousand people will want to make changes to their stuff - in ways we haven't planned on.   Changes above and beyond what they got in the kickstarter.  So I spend the next six months  processing little changes.    

I've complained to KS support in the hope that they will address it..... we'll see.

I only created my Permies account today.  I used the same email address as I did for my kickstarter pledge ($15.00 level).

When I login and click "my stuff", is just says

"You don't have purchased any premium threads"

I"m in no hurry, just letting you know.

For 14 days, kickstarter fondles the money and fiddles with things.   Then, after the 14 day money fondling period, they send the money.  It takes 3 to 5 business days to arrive.  Then we take all the money, put it in a bit pile, jump in it, make it into a big pile, jump in it a few more times, then use the money to buy lemonade and other beverages ... it goes on and on like this until we get bored of that kind of thing.   Maybe two days.  

So that leaves us at about August 17th (depending on oodles of variables).   We then take the money and buy things we need to finish the editing.  If Dan and I are super on top of everything, it could be about a week.  

So that means that if everything goes perfectly to plan, and there is no adventures in comedy thrown in our path, then the final product would start going out to people on August 24th.  Probably.  Maybe.  

But life is one long comedy.  Which I why said on most of the kickstarter pledges "September" for "estimated delivery" and anything with a physical DVD I said "October".  And now I'm looking at it and see that I actually said "August" and "September".  Uh oh.  I guess we're going to have to skip the lemonade thing.   And maybe shrink the one week thing ...   damn!


So, it says "august".  So "August 31" is part of august, right?  :)

Hi there Paul.  I'm up in Stony Plain, Alberta (near Edmonton)  thanks for this kickstarter offering.  i hope there is a great deal of valuable information for my permacultural beginnings.  i "donated"  the 150 level with your PDC and ATC.  i also opted for the WDG version so that means i won't be charged the 25$ delivery fee, correct?  our exchange rate is shit at the moment so that would be nice to avoid.  also is this rocket stove DVD is a full "how to build and why" with specifics on materials and methods?  My application is supplemental heat for a large 2500 sq. ft. passive solar greenhouse w/ climate battery and a sauna built in on the north wall.  i hope to figure out how to build a rocket stove that will heat the sauna and the green house.  do you think this DVD will have enough info to allow me to do that or do you suggest some extra reading material so i can get myself fully edumacated?  thanks.

Nopers.  Kyrt did a pretty good job of spelling it out.  The WDG trick is about trying to work with some wonkiness with kickstarter.

Yowza.

The rocket ovens dvd does a really good job of teaching you about rocket ovens.   The rocket mass heater dvds will help with rocket mass heaters.  The ATC will have stuff about rocket hot water.  This stuff will augment the bits in your brain, and depending on your DIY level, you will be able to do all the things that you wish.  Lots of emphasis on "depending on your DIY level."

If you are hungry, hungry, hungry for more of this kind of info, I suggest Erica's book The Rocket Mass Heater Builder's Guide - very good.

Sorry I'm an idiot I wanted to change to STREAMING but I changed the pledge amount instead of the award.

Is there a way to update this on your end, I can't seem to find a way to do it!

Read some of the previous posts.   When this is all done, I will make sure that you get the right stuff.  But the first wave will be processed en masse.  

There are now so many people with these sorts of problems, I think the thing I need to do is start processing all this stuff separately.   There isn't gonna be 12 - it looks like there will be 200.

Kickstarter allows me to put notes in with each backer.  I think what I am going to do is add a note for each change to be made.   I won't be able to process those notes until everything else is done, and each note will need to be processed manually, one at a time.  But I will get to all of them.  

I think I also need to look at every last backer where the pledge level is different than the reward level and email them individually.  This is going to take some time to sort out.

Yah.... PITA now.... It really, as I recall, was not very clear when I upped my pledge amount. I just assumed changing one's pledge inherently meant changing one's reward level. I've raised this with KS support but haven't had a response yet. Guess I (and others) need to pay more attention in the future. Sorry for the hassles to come Paul.

Haven't handed anything out yet.  Kickstarter is still sorting out who has officially paid or not.

However, I did, just now, download the backer report and think that today I might hand out the one of the goodies.

Apparently I'm a dumb-ass. I increased my pledge to $30 so I could get the physical DVD. So excited to see it! Now it would seem my "selected reward" is still the $20 reward level for a download only. To which I said "damn it! What did I do wrong?!"

I know this is a big pain in the ass to you, but I was really hoping to get the DVD. Can we make that happen???

Here is what I am doing now:  there is a field in the kickstarter stuff for me to put a special note.   So for all the people where things got wonky, I will try to get it all sorted out.   So your stuff will be processed at the level that you have specified to kickstarter en masse.   And then after the last bit has been sent out, I'll go back and manually process the glitches manually, one at a time.  

So I have now added a note to every account in this thread to be sorted out when this is over.

Kickstarter does not have a way for me to change to your pledge stuff to be part of the en masse stuff.

Good day Paul. I wrote on permies about how my pledge got lost. I finally contacted Kickstarter and they said since the program was over they can not fix the problem but to contact you. Apparently, they have had tons of emails possibly of similar issues. It is up to you to honour my pledge of the 80.00 package or not. Please let me know. Not sure I would still pay with my Visa or send an etransfer. Have a nice day.  

Kickstarter says that you are not a backer.   Not sure how to respond.   And I don't see your name in the support thread either.  I am really confused.
