This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in round wood woodworking.

This BB is the building of a shaving horse.

A shaving horse (Sometimes called a shavehorse or shaving bench) is a device used to clamp wood tightly in place against a pulling force while working with a spokeshave or draw knife. It allows for quick release and reclamp as you work the greenwood.  It is somewhere between a vice and a bench.

A single-Log version

Roy Underhill explaining the shave horse in the later half of the video.

To get certified for this BB provide photos or video (less than 2 minutes) showing the following:

- Your chunks of wood that you are starting with
- Progress about halfway through, with the hand tools you have decided to use for this
- Final product

Does anybody know what the tool is he's using at the 3:40 mark to smooth off the split log a bit? Is that some kind of long-handled froe? Looks like fun.

Approved BB submission
I did this one already, so I'm posting the pics I took at the time. Bonus shot of my son feeling like a boss.

I had to replace the original legs, I used wormy citrus wood because I had some on hand. Found out it was wormy when the leg snapped. Replaced with narrow bits of cedar.

I already have plans to modify the finished product. The legs don't splay enough in the back, so it's unsteady. I also want to replace the screws with tusk tenons in the front to make it more easily adjustable.

 I think that's an adze.

Legend has it that if you rub the right tiny ad, a genie comes out.
