Permaculture Now! - Desert or Paradise?

Streaming version of the DVD - Instant View

This is a beautiful, 33 minute long video of Sepp Holzer's projects, philosophies and methods.  English Dubbed.

In this DVD, Sepp Holzer demonstrates his worldwide ecological restoration work using "Holzer's Permaculture". The video focuses on his work with water, and how we humans have messed up the ecological balance through dams and other unnatural water features. Sepp Holzer states, "When the right water balance is achieved, than from my point of view, 70% of the work is done. Because then you've got rich vegetation and diversity." He proceeds to show just what kind of water retaining earthworks he uses, such as retention ponds, terraces, hugelkultur, and even how he would create an oasis in the desert

You will get a view into his different projects around the globe: in Southern Portugal, Russia, and Krammerhoft in the Austrian Siberia. His philosophy is, "Nature is perfect, it keeps itself in balance better than anything else can. So I have to take care that the appropriate natural predators are there--whether ducks, chicken. geese or pigs, depending on the size of the place. To take care of the population of snails, mice or rats. This is not difficult at all. Nature keeps itself in balance better than anything else can. Understand it. Not fight it." You will see the various plants he uses around fruit trees, the sunflower seed landrace he's used since the 1950's as a child, how he uses natural predators like ducks and chickens and pigs to keep.

This movie shows how to make a better world, and it's not through politics. To Sepp, there are no natural disasters. All disasters are from humans mismanaging nature, and the solution is through being with nature and learning from working with it. According to Sepp, "I don't expect anything from politics. As I see it, things will only change if children grow up with nature...because children who grow up with nature, protect their nature."

How does one get the digital version? I only see the link for buying the DVD, and there's no DVD player where I live.

This version is the digital movie.  I changed the title to remove "DVD"

I just wanted to mention that this isn't like live streaming. It loads ahead, like when watching a youtube video. This video is hosted by Vimeo, so for those with slower/limited internet, you can set it to a lower quality and let it load for a while, and you should be able to have a pretty good watching experience.

I have slow internet, and I managed to watch this in low quality without any issues. I can't always do that with some streaming services.

Why is this only available to US residents? Will it be more widely released soon? Would love to watch it....

I think it might be due to VAT stuff. Whatever VAT is. Paul always mentions it when people ask why things aren't available outside of the USA. I guess VAT laws shut down a website called Scrubbly that used to sell podcasts and videos, and Paul doesn't want to end up shut down like them. (He actually used to sell a bunch of stuff of Scrubbly, but then it shut down. Which is actually why he started the digital market here on permies!)

I think there might be a loophole where someone in the USA could buy access as a "gift" for someone outside of the USA, after conveniently being given the same amount of money. But, I think VAT--or some other random government agency of sad--might not like that...

As far as I know, this is the only digital viewing option and it is available only in the US.

Everybody else must buy the physical DVD: https://amzn.to/2Uu6Tgr

I feel like I have pulled off something pretty cool to offer a digital market of cool permaculture stuff.  Making this stuff available outside of the US appears to be deadly and frankly I don't have the time for the paperwork.

VAT= Value Added Tax, and I'm a little frustrated at how close I am to the 49th Parallel (30 km.) and unable to purchase. Any assistance deeply appreciated.

So this isn't a rental,  but a purchase,  correct?

I give this video 9.5 out of 10 acorns.

It's Sepp. I can't get enough of him. The video has stunning before/after shots of the projects. It's like it says right on the tin, "Desert or Paradise."

It's a marvel to see (and hear!) the abundance and diversity he's created with these projects. I also really appreciated seeing the cross-section drawings for his designs; it really makes his underlying principle easy for me to understand.

Hearing his insight and wit is always enjoyable for me.

The missing half-acorn is just for the half-dozen text chapter titles that didn't get translated (It Does say "Dubbed" right there in the title). Though squinting at "Ekqlogische rekreation" works okay, too.

My favorite quote from the video:

"Good times? Bad times? That's just stupid, there's no such thing.
Time is always good. It's just humans... When too many people are stupid at the same time, then it's a bad time."

Now I just want more Sepp.

This quote! I feel like plastering it everywhere and on everything. Kids truly need time in nature, for so many, many reasons!

Sepp is always an inspiration to me and this is just what I needed to rekindle the fire for implementing permaculture on our less than ideal rocky and hilly property. I'm glad I'm young as this may take some time lol

Completely agreed! Found that quote to be super timely for me to hear today since I'm currently reading There's No Such Thing As Bad Weather in which the author talks about the same thing- children growing up in nature take care of nature.

It seems the Scandinavians, culturally, have a way better understanding of that than everyone else.

I took am north of 49 (and north of 60) Dan so I am assuming you are in Canada I would hazard a guess in Manitoba..

The DVD is available through Amazon.ca currently for $61.14

https://www.amazon.ca/Holzers-Permaculture-Now-Paradise-Starring/dp/3200029285

Although not currently available through Amazon.com

But I can't afford that, so yes Paul's link for streaming is awesome for all our friends to the south.

(And here I was thinking VAT was FAT for politicians but without the Value that they promised but Fail to deliver!)

Bragging rights here: I just scored this book, used, and it arrived last week, in time for me to bring to Nunavut, along with his permies book -- for me it's like bringing along a BFF

I live on a rocky, sandy loam 5 acres. I would LOVE to know if this would work out here in Indian Reservation Arizona.
They gave me pumpkin ice cream. It was not pumpkin pie ice cream. Wiping my tongue on this tiny ad:
