Hi all!

A while back, I did the math and set an alert for myself so that I'd remember today. I was born on 8 April 1970. I was married on 20 April 1997. And today, 1 May 2024, I've been married half my life. If I'm even slightly lucky, I'll never drop back under the halfway mark.

Anyway, that's all. :-)

Bravo to you and your partner.

Can we twist your arm to get your favorite story that has happened in your married years?

Gosh. I love sharing stories and don't really have the privacy filter that a lot of folks do, so there's no problem there, but I have to figure out what a 'favorite' story might be.

In the meantime, a story from our actual wedding:

I'm a little anxious by nature and there's a lot of stress in getting married. It was OK, but certainly tense. So we've done some stuff -- pictures, getting ready, whatever and we're up there with our friend John, acting as officiant, making vows or reading poems or whatever. Cathy's little brothers had been ushers twenty minutes ago, but now they're standing up with her, behind her maid of honor. And Sean, who's like eleven years old, suddenly pitches face-first into the greenery, smashing his face on a big glass vase. Time slows down. I'm looking around and everyone is in shock and no one is taking the initiative, so I leave my place at the center of things and go to check on him. Other people did also eventually come see to his wellbeing, but I was the first person on site, to start seeing if he was OK. The first person behind me was this pushy lady I didn't know who started ordering me around. It turns out she was their family doctor...so that was handy. Sean was OK, but bruised up pretty good, and when he finally regained consciousness, he burst into tears and apologized for "ruining our wedding". The thing is, it was awesome for me. By interrupting that tense moment with the need to act, intervene, and see to his needs, it completely broke the tension. I went back to my spot up front as they were leading him off to the side of things and I was cool as a cucumber! Everything was easy then. Another funny aspect of that is that when I did go back to the ceremony, my almost-wife was giggling in response to the bizarre situation...just as a stress reaction, but I gave her some serious stink-eye for giggling at her poor brother's injuries.

That is a wonderful story. So presumably you are still his favorite brother-in-law?

Congratulations and many happy wishes and may you make it to at least 50 years of marriage like my grandparents did!

As his only in-law, I must be!

Congratulations and many happy wishes and may you make it to at least 50 years of marriage like my grandparents did!

Thanks, I'd love that!

Congratulations, Christopher!! Good on ya, for coming to the poor kid's aid, so quickly! Now, are you seeing the calender to let you know when you've hit the 3/4 mark?

Nice question, Timothy!

Ha! To hit the 3/4 mark, We'd both have to live until I'm 108. Seems unlikely. But I guess on something like 13 May, 2051 it'll have been 2/3 of my life. I guess we're not super-likely to both make that, but it's within the realm of normal probability. (I'll be 81 and she'll be 82 -- those are both reasonably likely, but not so much for them to both hit.)

Hey Congrats, good for you!
Last year I realized I hit it myself when I turned 50 and we were married 25. We still need to have some sort of party (for both; since the pandemic we've managed to not keep up on these big milestones). Hope you all get to celebrate it well!

Congratulations Christopher!
That's an important milestone...you've done well

Steve and I will hit 2/3 in 2025 at 75 years old, 50 of them married.
We married in 1975 when we were both 25.

Congratulations! Here's to many more years even if you never make it to 3/4. I bet every guest at the wedding remembers your poor brother in law's collapse.

Hmmm... do I have to count only 1 marriage or can I count all of them?

Carla, I don’t know! I suppose it depends on your circumstances and what feels important to measure. Whatever feels right to you, probably is.

I think if I’d had two two-year “failed” marriages before finding the right wife and sticking with it, I probably wouldn’t include those. But if I lived with a woman for 20 years and she died and I married a new woman five years later, I probably would count that. But I’m just guessing. (My kids have different mothers but my son’s mom and I weren’t ever married, so it’s all hypothetical to me.)

I think you're right, Christopher! One it is! And, that means this year will be 1/4, for me. I was 60 in February, and our 15th anniversary is next month.
