This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Natural Building.

For this BB, you will be making a a solar finder, locate true solar south and leave a permanent marker!

(source: Instructables)

To document completion of the BB, provide proof of the following:
      - Photograph the site before building your solar finder
      - Photograph your finder on the site and prepared to mark
      - Photograph your morning marks and your afternoon mark, as you make them
      - Photograph the resulting marks that indicate Solar South
      - Repeat this process 3 separate times on the same site and finder.
      - Correct for errors and permanently mark the site for true Solar South (pictures!)
      - permanent marker can be dry stack or something else weather resistant

I had the privilege to chat with Paul and Josiah today before the Greenhouse Build Zoom and got more info on this project.
I put this page together with information I found online that related to the information Paul and Josiah shared with me.

Thanks, Guys!

Here is my submission for the natural Building - Straw - Donkey List - Build a Solar Finder BB.

I created this page to document my experiments and data collection for the solar finder portion of this BB.  Please look there for the photographs of moring and afternoon marks and information on data collection.  Results of the solar finder: the azimuth of solar noon is 169° and an east-west line of 259°, I built the permanent marker from a cinder block, local rocks, and some soil I moved to start with a level base.

Here is the site before building the solar finder or the marker

To document the completion of the BB, I have provided the following:
      - Photograph the site before building your solar finder
      - Photograph your finder on the site and prepared to mark
      - Photograph your morning marks and your afternoon mark, as you make them
      - Photograph the resulting marks that indicate Solar South
      - Repeat this process 3 separate times on the same site and finder.
      - Correct for errors and permanently mark the site for true Solar South (pictures!)
      - permanent marker can be dry stack or something else weather resistant

Can this BB be slightly tweaked for the sake of honesty and transparency?
Change:  "For this BB, you will be making a a solar finder, locate true solar south and leave a permanent marker"
to: "For this BB, you will be making a a solar finder, locate true solar south in the northern hemisphere and true solar North in the southern hemisphere and leave a permanent marker"

Axiomatically, True Solar South is exactly opposite True Solar North and this is a PEP BB set in Missoula so finding True Solar South applies , the RAP (Rules According to Paul) to my mind dictate that a tenet of Permies is honesty, which means that for the "southies" they will need to find solar north first before converting it to solar south.  By applying a fixed marker, to solar south, it may not be the most useful outcome for the activity.
If this is accepted, the rest of the BB will need to be similarly worded.

For your consideration please Dave.
