This issue has come up twice in the "add 10 words" thread, where someone reads the last thread on a page and replies to that without realizing there is another whole page. I know that I made the same mistake when I was new to permies.

Here's an idea that belongs in tinkering. Perhaps at the end of every subject that goes beyond one page, a little staff note could automatically appear, telling the reader that this is not the end, there's another page.

... just to show I'm not the only one noticing this problem! Credit where credit is due - Dale's suggested we do something about this!

Other opinions please?

I'm a chronic forum lurker so I'm well trained to look for page numbers before posting...

...but...

...I'm probably not normal.

Is it harder to see that there are more pages in mobile than it is in desktop?  About the same?  easier?

...but we totally love all the work and influence you have on permies. I find permies easier to see things on than the few other similar sites, like "Backyard Chickens," I've visited. This issue has caught me more often when there's only a single page, than when there are multiple pages already. I'm bad at scrolling far enough down to see the page numbers at the bottom, and I don't why I don't always notice the ones at the top. Permies has trained me to pay more attention to such things.

I don't have trouble seeing additional pages - when I remember to look, lol

I have found myself replying to page 1 when there are 10 of them, but more commonly I have stopped reading , thinking that was the end, only to realize later, that there was more.

I think it's more of a problem for new members, so to complicate things more, maybe just have these messages pop up for the first month or year.

Or, if someone tries to reply from page 1 of a multi-page thread, have a little message pop-up that tells them, that there are more pages.

To make it even more complicated it could be set up so that when you hover over the reply button, the same thing comes up. I don't know what goes on inside my computer, it's my job just to spit out complicated ideas :-)

Something I thought would be really cool would be a little hovering thingy (like the bell notification in desktop view) near the bottom right of the screen that said "pg. 1 of 4"

maybe it would be a PIE feature?

But I don't know if it's possible or if we have the funding to make it happen.

I do so little reading on similar sites that I wouldn't know how other sites deal with this problem, or if they simply don't.

Generating ideas for potential fixes is a fine approach in my opinion, because I never know in the real world when an "it won't work" idea, will be transformed by someone else into an awesome idea!

I get tricked by this every once in a while.  Particularly when I get an email notification for a reply to a thread I've been in.  I click it and it takes me to the 25th post on the page.  I read it and click reply.  Then after replying it shows my reply after a post from the next page that I hadn't seen.

How about if the Reply button is greyed out if you aren't on the last page?
