This link: http://www.https.com//permies.com/wiki/108662/PEP-Badge-Natural-Medicine

took me to a page labeled "homeimprovement.com" (tho' the url above still showed in the address window), loaded with oh, pictures re how to lay sidewalks and other distinctly not-permies pages. Has permies been hacked? Happened in both Firefox and Chrome, so likely not a browser issue here.

Uh, not sure how to insert a screenshot of the wrong page...will try the file attachment thingie...

HTH

Now that this thread is live, I see the http redundancy error in the link. But I got to that link by clicking on it in a permies page (pardon my short term memory fail, but I don't know *which* permies page I was on when I found it, I had several open to read at the time.)

Where did you find the link?  Looks like someone tried to post https://permies.com/wiki/108662/PEP-Badge-Natural-Medicine and it got fudged up somehow with an extra http:// bit at the start.

I have absolutely no idea why the fudged up link would take you to a home improvement site though...

What a clever, clever person.

They registered "http://www.https.com" as a domain name.

So when there is a user error in any forum, and they put two https twice, it goes to their site!

Which I had thought of that.

Hey V Kay, question for you. Do you recall if you were just browsing the recent threads on the 1st or 2nd main page, or were you off in the depths of Permies looking at threads that were months or years old?

A web tech guy should be able to find it easily using simple search tools targeting all links. Or even from the logs, although I don't know what/how-long you keep it.

Anyway, I pretty sure finding it has a simple techy solution, even if it takes a few hours off by itself to run, the machine can do the work.

Regards,
Rufus

Hi V,

Good catch.

I think if you send your IP address to Burra or Raven in a PM that will help the techie person track where you traveled through the permie website potentially.
And what time frame was it?

OR

Scavenger Hunt!!!

(I tried searching with the pep badge link and the url that the clever Raven sussed out, to no avail.)

HA!  IP - that's what happens when I drink too much beer?

No, but seriously, I'm not very techie.  If you ever come here and the site won't load, that's usually me trying to do something tech and messing up big time.

I tried searching for "www.https.com" but All I came up with is this thread.

If it's something that is happening a lot, we can take steps to make it not happen so much.  But the people with mad-tech-skills would like to see the original place it happened first.

Villains always have antidotes. They're funny that way. Here's an antidote disguised as a tiny ad:
GAMCOD 2025: 200 square feet; Zero degrees F or colder; calories cheap and easy
