I have a new camera! It's a Canon EOS M50, and for me, is a huge step toward serious photography. But before I can master the manual mode, I need to learn this camera's basics: the symbols, menus, icons, etc. To do that, I thought it would be fun to follow the "Make 30 Photos" exercise at the "A Year With My Camera" website. And I'm going to put an additional twist on it and apply these to a homesteading or permaculture theme.

Anyone care to join me? There's no specific time frame required. We each work through the list at our own pace.

Here's the list:
1. Fill frame with colour
2. Things in threes
3. Kitchen
4. Taken at midday
5. Abstract
6. Snail's eye view
7. Reflection
8. Lit by a window
9. Older than me
10. Food
11. Shadows
12. Plain background
13. Eyecatching
14. Behind the scenes
15. Pattern
16. Wildlife
17. Just 2 colours
18. Circles
19. Self portrait
20. Stripes
21. Weather
22. Hands
23. Depth
24. Vintage
25. Texture
26. My neighbourhood
27. Botanical
28. Water
29. Books
30. Diagonals

Howdy,

My camera is a Canon PowerShot A580. I am also able to make short videos, but am still learning all the features, and yes a lot of the basics: the symbols, menus, icons, etc.  BUT,

the list looks interesting, so will also try.

Game on!

Here are the last of my chillis, the plant is overwintering in the basement

1) Fill the frame with colour. Did you know, red and green are complimentary colours - opposites on the colour wheel?

Nancy, thanks! I love cooking on it. The only thing I have trouble cleaning is the chrome. For cooking messes, the cooktop is actually easier to clean than a burner type gas or electric stove. Oven is the same. What I do get, is more sweeping and dusting because of dust , wood chips, and sawdust from the wood.

I love a picture that tells a story. I lean towards simplicity, but sometimes, a picture full of details is just wonderful to see. So many questions pop into my head, and answers . . .  Why’s there a stack of firewood . . . Oh it’s wood fired! And there’s the ash bucket . . . And what’s that tap for, maybe it heats water, that’s awesome . . . The list goes on. Nice work with the lighting. The human eye is naturally drawn to brightest parts of an image, in this case, the doors on the stove, which is good as that’s the main subject. The light on the rim of the pet bed also has high contrast, so that also becomes a point of interest. If it was in the shadows, it might get overlooked. Your picture tells a story and the bed tells me you clearly love your pet, letting them curl up in the warmth but also in a high activity place!

This is the heart of our home. Here I sit, plan, write, cook, socialise and eat. And work on BB’s . . . I can see at least 10 here.

5. Abstract

This one made me think. It would have been easy to obtain abstract with a photo editor or one of the camera's built-in creative filter modes. But I'm working in beginner mode (auto) until I learn my way around the dozens of menus, so I challenged myself with this theme to use the camera as I have it set up now. The camera wants to "correct" shots in the auto mode, which further adds to the challenge.

One thing I learned from this exercise is, if I'm closer to the object than the lens can accommodate, the camera won't shoot.

Love this idea! I'm in---gotta dust off my Canon Rebel.  I get lazy and use my cell for pictures so much I kinda forget how to use my real camera. But I'm too afraid of dropping it in the ocean when I'm yakking, lol!

8. Lit by a window

More testing out my new camera. My previous cameras did very poorly with low light and the photos were always grainy. I was curious how this one would do in low light without the flash, so I chose an outdoor night shot for this theme.

9. Older than me

This one was taken with my new macro lens. The gold thimble belonged to my great-grandmother. The coverlet was handwoven by my great-grandfather's great-grandmother. Both are treasured heirlooms and older than me.

My camera is a Nikon d7200. I have a few lenses...most of what I'll posting was shot with either the 18-300mm zoom or the 200mm Nikon macro.
