Here’s a current article, I thought a few permies might be interested in.  Composting human remains is now becoming legal in various US states.

This catalogs a rather industrialized urban situation, but seems like folks with property could devise a more pastoral setting, and process.

The ultimate in upcycling!

Kinda weird for me, even though in my rational brain it seems good and well.

I think for me right now I like Opalyn's natural burial cemetery a little better.

Yeah, weird it is, but it’s a new idea that is antithetical to our social norms and laws.  I am just glad it’s now an option, and can infiltrate into our social awareness.

Thanks for mentioning us. We do natural burial and natural organic reduction (human composting). We have a forested setting for both and are located in south central Washington state for anyone interested in our services.

Hi Opalyn,

I just read a Smithsonian article that says human composting is “typically done by placing the body in a steel container “ …

Can you tell me if that’s accurate?  Or maybe even a requirement?

For those of you that are not familiar with human composting here are some threads:

This book is very informative:

I was one of the lucky winner at the book promotion.

It is not a requirement in Washington State. I think some are made of concrete and other materials as well.

It is required that the vessel be easy to clean (at least for our purposes) and be dedicated for the purpose(I think).

Our ”cradles” are made of wood and lined with material similar to shower stalls.
Here is more information: Herland Forest Cemetery NOR
