Personally I dislike the endless proliferation of sub-fora here. It seems to get increasingly difficult to find the right spot to put a post, because they often don't seem to fit well.

Edit - this comment was original a reply to another thread that was split off, which was encouraging creation of more fora. It wasn’t really intended to be a complaint or a stand alone thread, but I welcome the discussion on.

I know exactly what you mean Michael, the site is just expanding like mad. I do think the different forums make it easier to find things though - you can look just in the apple forum to look for a specific pest for example.
The staff do the best job we can at moving threads that seem to be put in an inappropriate forum, but we're (mostly) human volunteers, so may not spot some threads that could be better placed. If you hit the report button if you're not sure then the placing of the thread can be reviewed and moved if felt appropriate.

If you have constructive suggestions for better organisation, I'm sure that would be welcome!

I have had similar thoughts in the past as well... but, ultimately everything is searchable. Sometimes the best search is using google and limiting to permies.com results.

The forums are more like an old school hierarchical or categorical organization that I remember in ye olde days of the internet.

It can be nice though since not everyone is interested in all the broad ranging topics. One of the best features of the forum organization is that you can customize your viewing experience. Have you played with that? I don't think it's a pie-only feature... This feature could also probably be improved in the future, so feedback and bug-testing are appreciated.

Edit: Somehow I misread your post the first time. I see that you're talking about selecting a forum when posting, not when searching.

I agree with that as well. It can be hard, and sometimes there is no perfect fit. I forget if it's possible to post to just the main forum category or not... In any case, as Nancy said we staff are pretty consistently organizing and reorganizing new posts into various appropriate forums.

I think it is not possible.

So if I have a generic "energy" post, I'm forced to find a fit for it in one of the sub-fora. That fit can often feel rather artificial, especially if the discussion is more wide ranging.

When I don't know what is the best forum for a Topic, I usually do a search on the forum.

Using your example "energy":

energy

The best choice seems to be "alternative energy" though I might pick "conservation", "hydro", or even "low tech".

This is fun! Any other words to search for?

Interesting... I wonder if there is a reason why we have it set as not possible to post to the general forum... sometimes the general forum is more specific than the subforum depending on the post.

The Hierarchy goes (if I remember correctly) - Permies.com > Categories > forums > threads > posts

So you can start a new thread in a forum, but not a category.

I found the tutorial here for starting a new thread:
How to start a new thread

and it does basically say, do the best job you can at selecting a forum and hit report if you're not quite happy, or it fits in more than one forum equally.

Just to be clear:  we have no subforums.  We have more than a hundred forums organized under categories.

An example of a thread that didn’t really fit was my one about mental health discussions from a few days ago.

It ended up in purity >> personal care

Along side discussions about split ends and natural lipstick.

I would have appreciated a chance to post in a more general forum, but the forums are so numerous and narrowly specific I couldn’t find a better fit.

People Care is one of the core permaculture ethics, and mental health feels like a key part of that. But I also don’t think creating another forum just for MH is helpful as it contributes to fragmenting things further.

“Not available in default view”

I’m not sure how to switch to the “beta view” it mentions on my phone. This is chrome on an iPhone.

Yes, maybe those might have been a better fit. I’m not sure I would have thought of the “community” category when looking for a place for that post though.

Thanks.

The forum has a lot of interesting forums you might not know of.

Some that I find interesting:

https://permies.com/f/392/productive-downtime

https://permies.com/f/68/introductions

https://permies.com/f/69/projects

We had a book promotion in "Communications" several years ago:

We find this kind of rampant individuality very disturbing. But not this tiny ad:
