I'm wondering if anyone has any improved named varieties of elderberry and would be willing to sell me some cuttings.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions,  but I am not looking for commercial source for these. I want to buy them from a permie.

I don't know about "improved" elderberries, we just have very highly producing, wonderful tasting elderberries. We sell tons of berries and Sambucol every year. Can't beat our pies. I'll give you as many cuttings as you want to come get. Just yesterday we finished transplanting a whole huge patch of them over to the chicken coop and planted fruit trees and blueberries in their place.  The guys who helped took home a truck load and carload to their farms. ---You can have the cuttings free, but I cannot ship to you.

Hi Fred, I have a small elderberry nursery in Gilbertsville Pa.  I only grow a variety called "Marge" and i love them!  They have big berries,
disease resistant, and stay compact, dont run.  They get huge clusters of flowers which are highly sought after for the medicinal benefits
and appetizers.
This is my website you can buy different sizes.  Enjoy!

Welcome to Permies!

That is really neat to have an elderberry nursery. I'll be looking more into the plants because I might have to try growing one...

Hi Tim!  I drink elderberry syrup every morning.  Its made with honey and essential oils.  Say bye bye to those seasonal colds!
Elderberry wine is really good too!  There's so many recipes i havent tried yet!

Oh man - just a bit too late! Mine already broke bud here in Maryland.
I am willing to send some if you want to risk it, I just don’t know how well they would do. I have Ranch, Gordon, two European varieties I have forgotten the names of, and a technically unimproved species that bears beautifully. You can keep me in mind for next year too if you like.

Any of you Elderberry growers freeze dry berries?

I’ve picked them wild for a few years now, and my method of de-stemming them as been to freeze them in a big trash sack and then shake the sack a bunch… works moderately ok. Most of the stems settle to the bottom, or real big pieces float to the top with no berries on them.

I was looking a freeze dryers and was thinking if freeze drying would make it easier or harder to separate. I was thinking maybe freeze dry then a sieve or bucket with a screen might work

How do you do it?

Thanks for the offer Lina!  It probably is too late, but I will definitely keep you in mind for next year.

I can get some, Fred :) I have some already in water, sprouting roots, but the ones outside haven't leafed out yet. Did you find another source? Or shall I go pick some for you? I have no idea their cultivar name. I can get purple ones or blue ones? Purple from a neighbors backyard, blue that are wild.

Also, Julie from DirtPatchHeaven has some, I bet. She sells cuttings on craigslist. I got some from her 2 years ago, but they arent old enough for me to take cutting from yet. She can probably remember the variety she has.

Is this the best way to root cuttings?  Just put them in water?

Jim Fry, what is the best and easiest way to plant cuttings from elderberries. I would love to plant some more as I had some bunnies eat mine down. I have gotten some small fences to keep them from chewing on them again, once I replant.
Thanks

From what I understand you can just stick the cuttings directly into the soil (Michael Kilpatrick of the Thriving Farmer Podcast / The Farm on Central sells them and that's what I recall).  Of course, trusting my recollection is always a bit of a gamble.

We have been attempting to establish some elderberries as well...critters got to the ones I planted in 2022, about half came back last year, but it was something of a drought summer here, so I should really pick up some more to establish a patch.

NOW in early Spring is the time to plant roots or cuttings. And even further into summer they will grow well - you just probably will not get berries the first year.

IF you PM me and  send me your name, address, etc. I could send you some FREE wrapped clippings with the named variety. You should have some root starter for mine as these will be short pieces of limbs instead of roots. That gives them a jump start, as if they really need that.
