I created an account a few years ago but didn't do much with it. Recently, I started on my SKIP bits and badges. Then, became staff. One of the most challenging things I noticed was navigating permies.com. As I was training, I saw others search permies by using Google. Using the keyword "permies.com" tells google you want that included. Then, add what you are searching for. It is the fastes way I have found to navigate permies.com.

If you want to lookup the SEPPer program, go to Google and type in "permies.com Sepper".

If you want to lookup hugelkultur, go to Google and type in "permies.com hugelkultur".

For more specific searches simply add more keywords.

Hopefully, this will enhance others' permies experience as it has mine.

Yes, it works better from outside this website.

I use Google to search for permies forum posts.

I don't bother using the dot com and that works really well for me.

I find the permies advanced search tool very useful once you play with it a while to learn how it works.

Any tips you can share on how to get that to work well?

I generally find the permies search really helpful when I'm trying to find a post or thread that I know exists, but I don't know where it is.

One thing I realized that I can do is hold "ctrl" and select different forums. This is helpful if I'm trying to find an old thread that I know existed.

You can also search by user ID. So, if you want to find a thread by Paul about a certain subject, you just put a "7" in the ID number field. (His user name is easy to remember since it's lucky number 7!) But, you can find anyone else's user ID by just going to their profile and copying the number there. My profile URL looks like https://permies.com/u/167341/Nicole-Alderman. So, my user ID number is 167341. If someone wanted to search all my posts because they remember me saying something somewhere, they could plug that ID number and search my posts.

You can also search by date for things. You can also see the oldest (or newest) threads on a certain subject.

Holding CTRL allows you to search multiple forums at once. This is really handy if you want to search a whole category.

If I want to find out what Paul says about permies apples, I can search Tinkering, with Paul's ID number, to see what he said

If you are not sure where to look use the top box to select all forums. Looking for something specialized, "goat disease" for example, it is often best to start by searching the goat forum for the exact phrase "goat disease" in the subject area only. If that doesn't find what you want broaden the terms to sick goat &/or include the message area too. If it's a thread that you know exists & remember who wrote it you can use the author's name. As well as their ID as Nicole said. There are powerful search tools available on site. I think it's mostly just a matter of practice using them.
