Hello my permaculture friends, I am raising a bunch of lovely half wild children, and for a science curriculum they are to watch A 10 to 15 minute video, sketch what they have learned and write down key points that they want to remember. Then tell me what they don't want to forget. It's self Study.

I was looking into permies forums for a place where there was video footage library of all info documented. Inot able to find any. Am I missing The right spot to look into or is there not such a thing right?

And if it is not, is it possible that there could be?

Hey Carma, my first thought would be Kahn Academy. They have courses in science at all kinds of subjects and levels.

I've looked into that, yes!

I'm hopeful that the vast video knowledge base here would be easier found and navigated.....

Links to the original posts.....

Lots of work but it'd be really cool!

In terms of YouTube videos/channels, Crash Course has some pretty good introductory stuff in several fields. Might also be cool to find some reading related to what you're learning about. It could be a book or article (for example, NPR's climate solutions week) but, depending on age/level, you might also find scientific papers. New research tends to be ultra-specific and technical, but if you can find a review paper (which basically summarizes the existing body of knowledge on a given field), those can be a bit easier of a read. One note on the scientific papers/articles: I would recommend seeing what you have access to via your library. Some research databases are expensive for individuals but some organizations can give access (for example, the Arizona State Library has this (link: https://azlibrary.gov/dazl/online-reference_ online reference). Could try having a "journal club" where you all read/learn about something and come back together to discuss what you learned both as a means of learning and to gauge everyone's progress. In terms of note-taking, you probably want to make sure they are taking good notes. Note-taking is a skill and if you are learning through taking notes, you need to be taking good notes. Might also look at state standards for science or any other subject just to make sure they are getting enough instruction. They have specific learning goals for each age (ex: graduating kindergarteners should be able to count to 100).

I like your idea!
I don’t know much about its potential execution though.
Until then, I like to type “site:permies.com video” into whatever search engine I’m using at the time.
It gets broad results but they could be narrowed by adding a forum word in front of “video” - like “woodworking” or “fiber” or “wofati” or whatever.

That’s my favorite way to find videos here.

I am in agreeance, a source like that would be wonderful!

Permies is staffed by a group of volunteers to ensure the day-to-day operations. We don't have anyone that works on content curation full tile so it can be tough to form things like a video library.

If you would be willing to compile a list of videos and threads, I would be glad to work with you to create a reference if that is something you would like to do?

Paul Wheaton has a lot of videos at youtube:

Wheaton Labs Boots also have lots of video at youtube:

Those alone to me would last a lifetime!

The videos and documentaries forum is here: https://permies.com/f/84/videos

So what you would like is a table linking to (freeview?) videos on different permaculture subjects?

Maybe we could start with a list of different topics and then people could suggest videos that they have found helpful - and if we get any gaps people know what to film next!

Really glad this idea is getting discussed - I know it's a massive undertaking, and I don't even know exactly what the target/goal looks like! My enthusiasm far exceeds my knowledge in this area, which I'm sure will be apparent as I brainstorm. There's no coding or software experience on my résumé.

I vaguely envision a list or database of links to videos that have already been shared in existing posts/threads, sorted by topic/forum. The database would be searchable by topic, and include links to the original threads, like you already mentioned, Carma.

My thinking is that the videos already posted to Permies
  • have already been searched for and found by a permies-minded person
  • are resourceful, helpful, pertinent, relevant, _________ enough to be worth posting (they've been through some level of quality filtering)

  • Perhaps the downside is it may detract attention and traffic away from the priceless discussions (even with including links to those discussions).

I'm willing to spend some time on this  - not sure how much I can commit but I'm willing.

It is possible to do a fair amount with the functions we already have on permies with no extra coding.

You can make a table with the links and information. Make the thread a wiki. This allows you to edit whenever you like to add new pictures or update information. You can make a post a wiki through the "wiki" tab when you compose or edit your post. The "wiki" tab is next to the attachments tab where you add pictures.

    See https://permies.com/wiki/179765/Native-edible-plants-North-America for one example.

I think it is easy enough to search for a term on a web page.

So you might have (to pick a couple of videos at random):

    topicpost linkvideo sourceAdditional Notes
Underground food forest homehttps://permies.com/t/218810/Underground-Food-Forest-Fresno-CA#1854909youtubeUnderground home carved from hardpan in hot climate to create cooler microclimates in Fresno California
Raised beds for improving wet soilhttps://permies.com/t/50/210793/permaculture/Tree-field-Skye#3161120youtubeNancycam video of developing forest garden with raised beds and coppice woodland on Isle of Skye
    etc......

    How I made the table:
||topic||post link||video source||Additional Notes||
    |Underground food forest home|https://permies.com/t/218810/Underground-Food-Forest-Fresno-CA#1854909|youtube|Underground home carved from hardpan in hot climate to create cooler microclimates in Fresno California|

    |etc|.|.|.||
Maybe a database made with spreadsheet or google sheets might be a good idea. Perhaps we could make one then make it a wiki page. I would be glad to start working on a google sheet for that. Think it might be a cool idea where everyone could add their favorite permaculture videos and then people trying to find media could filter by stuff like topic, channel, etc.

Thanks, Nancy - that is really helpful.

I like that each forum would have its own wiki of videos in that forum this way. Kind of self-sorting.

The OP was looking to have videos of a certain length, is that worth adding as a column?

Another thought we do have a movie and video review grid already: https://permies.com/wiki/video-reviews

The review grids are set up in a certain way, so can't easily be modified (except adding more on by adding reviews) but hat may also be helpful for people looking for video ratings.

I like the idea of a spreadsheet so we can use those filters, as well as the ability to sort each columns. Is it possible to embed a Google sheet here at Permies like we embed videos?

On the other hand, I like the table-in-a-wiki idea because it keeps traffic here on the site. But maybe we lose the full functionality of a searchable, sortable spreadsheet built elsewhere.

So far for possible columns/filters we have:
    Name of video
    Topic
    Post or thread link
    Link to video
    Time (Video duration)
    Channel/Creator
    Notes

Would a column for “year created” be helpful?

This project might clean up some broken links as we find them, too.

We have something similar here on permies for recipes. But it's "just" a wiki. So no fancy functions.

First video database wiki is up, with a few entries.

    Some thoughts about the process:
I started with oldest threads, working my way through newer. Someone else might find a different way more logical to them.

I wasn't sure how "best" to order the entries. I settled on keeping Paul's videos at the top, then loosely ordering them all oldest to newest. I suppose we could order them by duration instead. I like having Paul's first however we order it.

Nancy, your template carried a lot of the "figuring out how" work. I don't have a lot of bandwidth for that these days; sincere thanks to you!

Once there's a table wiki posted to a forum, it's just a matter of chipping away at it, bit by bit.

If anyone has feedback on how it can be made better, easier to use, something it's missing, mistakes I missed - please make it better, or let me know so I can make it better.
