I just made a new post here- https://permies.com/t/75152/young-man-advice-permaculture-kind#623908 and when I typed it, I had capitalized Sepp Holzer, and when I posted it, it showed up as lower case sepp holzer. I know this is nothing critical, just thought I'd point it out.

There are a few words which automatically get hyperlinked to relevant pages the first time they are used in a thread.  It helps people find answers even before anyone replies to their questions.

I can't remember all the words, but Sepp Holzer is one.

Might be fun to find some more.

I bet rocket stove is one.

How about Land, Tractor, Should ...I've capitalized all three just to see what happens as I know they have links.

...and will Sepp Holzer stay capitalized the third time posted or do they all link now?

and Experience is one.

Rainy day here, you're stuck with me.....

It does seem like Sepp Holzer is the only link that won't capitalize even after the first one though.

I imagine but is one? (EDIT...but it is not).

I suspect it depends on which staff member hyperlinked the words.

I know paul wheaton hates capitals - I wonder if his name is on the list?

I think the capital letters somehow make it harder for search engines to find stuff or that all lowercase is preferable to search engines.   Something like that.

So, the things are called "auto-links," I believe. When someone types Ernie and Erica or jack spirko or gift or forge or a bunch of other things, those get turned into links. Most of these links go to thread-boosted pages. If you want, you could pay to make one of your threads be a thread boost thread, and have a specific word link to your thread when it gets typed.

Here's more info on auto-links:
https://permies.com/wiki/61482/Thread-Boost-feature

Select a word or phrase, and a ‘look-up’ will be done to find out how many threads contain that phrase (click on Check Count to see how many threads contain that phrase). One instance of your phrase from each of those threads will then auto-link to your thread (this means that when a person clicks on the highlighted word or phrase, it will automatically take them to your thread!).
So, in the case of the word ‘hugelkultur’, this word appears in 3041 threads! If you choose this word as your auto-link, one of those words in each thread will be a link to your thread (not every time the word appears in each thread, just once). That’s 3041 links directly to your thread. (You can see the cost by making your selection, then scrolling down to the payment area. You can change your selections before check-out)

So, it looks like it only auto-links the word one time in each thread. There's some auto-links, like alot that always turn into links.

The question is, does Jack Spirko or Sepp Holzer become lowercase when it's not autolinked?

Edit: it appears that Jack Spirko does not become lower cased, but Sepp Holzer does. Interesting....
Staff note (Nicole Alderman) :

Weirdness, one Jack Spirko did become lowercased, and the other did not...

Staff note (Nicole Alderman) :

Let's see if Sepp Holzer turns into lower case in a staff note...

We do have programming that changes misspelled words and slang to correct language. I'm pretty sure it does it automatically. If you try to type "thanks" with a "X" instead of "ks" it automatically turns it into thankx ...or it makes you edit it to be correct language. I just typed it with an x to see what happens.. The same happen with some other slang words and abbreviations, like I M O.

I went and checked our list of automatically-fixed words, and Sepp Holzer is not on it, so that's not what's making it lower cased...

Waaait, it didn't automatically turn thankx into thanks. Let's try some others--maybe there is something not working right with our auto-links and automatic word-fixer.

thx
IMO

Or, maybe it doesn't change mine because I'm a Steward??? Can someone else try typing those abbreviations/slang?

This is a known issue for a long time guys. It's one of those not-so-easy-to-fix kind ones.  It only happens when you have more than one word in autolinks.

It won't. Even if Holzer was an auto-link.

Ah! So it's when the auto-link itself is composed of two words, it makes both words lower-cased. If the link is just one word, it does not mess with the making it lower or upper case.

Why isn't the automatic slang fixer thing changing my thankx to thanks?

I have had words that I have spelled, (or capitalized) one way be changed once I hit the submit button. I had assumed that if someone previously had added them as a hyperlink; then, however they are spell when added in a hyperlink, that makes them "locked in" essentially in how they are spelled or capitalized thereafter.

EDIT..I couldn't post the abbreviations...not even the ones in your post in quotes...sounds like a steward privilege

There is a difference in appearance for some of the 'hyperlinks'.  Some show as red and an obvious link while others are just a faint underline that is apparent when hovered over...maybe those aren't 'hyperlinks'?
I'm trying to think of some that haven't been used yet here as they only show the first time used...found some browsing a couple threads....

perennial
experience (this is one but because it has been used in a post above isn't underlined)
trees
acre
cardboard
land (already used)
apple tree
fence
water
berms

...and more, there are a lot of them

There are a lot of them! I found the list of them in our moderator tools. Some are "double underline" and some are just the dots. I think the double links, like alot and Cider Press always work. We've had that type of auto-links for a long time--I'm pretty sure since at least when I joined the forum. When we got thread boost, we got the ones with the dots, which only work the first time in a thread. Both type of links are stored in the same place in the moderator tools.
