List of Otises

This will be the list of Otises and Otessas.  Their information will be kept as private as possible so they aren't pestered.  This isn't a place to find your Otis and chat them up, it's mainly a place to show the variety of Otises that are out there to inspire the PEPpers/SKIPpers.  

Otises can send a posting to me (Mike Haasl) by PM (letter icon at the top right of your screen) or PM me for my email address and they can then send it via email.  PMs are rather private but higher level staff people can read them.

The Otis posting can be as detailed and specific as you'd like to be shown publicly.  I'd suggest that you not put your address or contact info in there.  I'd suggest including things like:
- Rough location (state or region)
- Acreage (wooded, open, etc)
- Established homesteading infrastructure (barns, sheds, gardens, fields, root cellar, solar panels, etc)
- Distance to the hardware store
- House (size, condition, etc)
- Start up capital (vehicles, tractors, cash, assets, etc)
- If you want your heir to live on your land first to learn the place or help out.  
- Detail how you'd want the transfer to occur
- Any other info that you think would inspire your PEPper to do well

Otis #1

Approx 10 mixed acres approx where Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky meet.  High humidity July to Sept. Hardware store 4 miles away. Larger communities at 30, 60, and 100 miles. 1970s ranch, with large metal building, carport, hay shelter, equipment shelter, and garden shed. Large pond. Large cistern.  Solar in place. Internet via telephone hotspot. On grid. Property transfer via will. Might consider someone moving on property with the right references, but not eager for this arrangement. Privacy valued.  

Otis #2:

Over 50 acres of remote, zone 5a, raw acreage near the Black Hills with springs and a small creek.  Stunning scenery and complete privacy, access requires 4WD.  The owner is starting to homestead it and looking for a PEPper(s) to share a portion.  This will be off-grid powered primarily by solar with propane backup, and there is only spotty cell service in one specific area of the property; have already signed up for beta Starlink internet service.  A fantastic town with friendly folks is approximately a 30 minute drive depending on weather and road conditions.  Details are negotiable.

Otis #3:

4 acres in the lower Great Plains.  Home site of a large farm but the farmland is now owned by others.  Barn, multiple outbuildings, 4 bay workshop, big house, greenhouse, fruit trees and gardens.  Owner is looking to charge minimal rent to cover insurance while they move into the city.  Once comfortable with the PEPper, a more permanent transfer would occur.  

Otis #4

Large acreage in western Montana with spring, river and well.  Owner has grown tons of food and raised thousands of chickens and is aging out.  PEPper could live in a separate 2 bed 1.5 bath house until a time where the owner would transition the property to them.  Owner is interested in wofati building and would purchase a sawmill or other gear to enable large projects.

Otis #5

5-10 acres in Central America by a volcanic lake.  Includes an off-grid house and aircrete dome.  The owner is working on aquaponics to support veggies, eggs and herbal medicine.  Looking to onboard an heir.

Otis #6

Farm in a very hot and kind of dry part of the midwest, 50-75 acres.  Hoping it will turn into a permaculture farm.  There isn't currently any housing available on site but there is space for a PEPpers to set up a living arrangement.

Otis #7

30 acres in the Ozarks with a multifamily dwelling, barn, tractor with all the implements, machine shed, horses, etc.  Looking for someone to help out with finishing projects and getting the place finished before the current owners need to move to assisted living.

Otis #8

I purchased 7 acres in the center of Portugal for my Parents to retire. It was a slow project but in a great spot. 4 years ago my Mom Died so my Dad and I continued. Then covid ensued caused the chaos we all felt. He got sick from a medical clinic visit and passed. Sad times.

We never started the final plans of cottages and now I am looking for a next generation that I could provide a unique possibility for their generational wealth. Its kind of a blank canvas with good infrastructure.

We finished a great workshop that is now a cottage fully operational offgrid. I live here now.

There are so many things to discuss with anyone interested. My question is.. Is, anyone interested in moving to Portugal and making a commitment to a long term plan?

Is there a way to show the otises our dream? What is it that we wish to create?
Briefly: its a high vibe, regenerative eco village and retreat center with accomodations.
I know that there are people out there who doesn't even need the money, so they are not seeling their property, but are waiting for an amazing project that makes them excited.

Otherwise you can just make a new post somewhere on permies and see if something develops.

Looking for some acreage where TX, AK, and OK meet around the red river watershed area to set up a hybrid silvopasture, aquaponics, and permaculture type ecossystem.

Looking for acreage in S. Ohio,  N. KY or WV. I have a small farm with cows and other animals. Hoping to get a bigger farm (minimum of 50 acres) to raise food and live off of. Having been doing this my whole life so pretty experienced just looking for a chance.

How would things work generally speaking or would there be any serious difficulties if one applies as a Canadian? Must we be American or is having good wholesome American homestead values enough? Also, my dad was a US Marine in Vietnam so I can apply for citizenship that way. And, my great uncle (regimental sergeant major) commandeered the last surviving Canadian war tank on D-Day in Normandy, France WWII (I’m mentioning it because I’m a little bit like those guys)

This is not a US only thing.  

By the time any of you get to PEP2, we will probably have four times more otises listed.  And for every otis on our list, my guess is that there are two more watching all this, but have opted out of being on our list.

One time an otis posted some details and ...  well ..  it was awful ...   about a hundred people got really pushy demanding to know why they were not worthy.

Our list of 25 includes Europe, N and S America (so far).  Yes, some are in Canada.

Any in northern Utah, eastern Idaho or western Wyoming?  

My husband is the grandson of a cattle rancher down in New Mexico, and when the grandfather passed Hubby inherited all farm implements, truck and tractors.  Unfortunately before he was able to get down to NM to get everything some unscrupulous characters made off with a couple heavy duty farm implements, but he has always made things work with what we have (blessed!).  Shortly after, his city-loving Mom (an only child) sold off grandfather's 325 acre prime land with everything under the sun on it for far less than its market value - thinking we'd never make it down there to work the land and raise a few head of cattle.  Broke dear Hubby's heart and while we are grateful to have our just-under acre here in the burbs that I've created a food forest on, garden about half of it, with established fruit guilds/an orchard and am working on creating a pond while Hubby works a full time job then putters around in our field/the "barn" (oversized red shed).  We are only 10 years away from his retirement, 5 if he gets his way and will want to be full-time Otis/Oterra Owens!  We haven't found the "it" acreage (out of our price point by millions!) and our hearts truly want to carry on a tradition that has been around for generations instead of just looking at the land and what we get out of it.  After all, if we don't steward or work hard for what we're given, we are not worthy of what we have.  My two cents!  

*Side note:* I love this site, yet I get overwhelmed and overloaded with all the info and so I have the SKIP book (Thank you Paul and Mike).  Hubby would pass the program in DAYS - minutes! - with his skill set/background while I might need a few hand-holders to help me get "certified"!  With what I've gained (and this gal is a Los Angeles, California-born former high school drill team dancer and 80's pop aficionado - deaf or not - who dug deep into her absolute love for Little House on the Prairie life when she met her cowboy and never looked back close to 20 years), I'm amazed I've gotten this far!  But God!

Can't stay on.  Got bushels to put up from the garden.  Later gater!

Just for information for anyone here interested in property in Europe.
I think this sort of arrangement is not impossible here but less likely. Space being a lot more limited, every bit of land is more valuable, and over a longer history, land has been divided up for many reasons (division among several heirs, political gifting of land between lords and the like) into small parcels which are hard to re-combine. Behind my .93 hectares (four parcels together), there is a hodgepodge of rectangular parcels of about 100 square metres each. One would have to track down every one of these families and convince them to sell, with the pain of Notary papers and fees, which are high here regardless of size of the parcel.

Big farms are very valuable AND there is actually an association called Terre de Liens ( roughly ‘land of links’) which does pretty well what SKIP does:
“Terre de Liens relies on an associative and civic dynamic which makes it possible to acquire agricultural land, to install a new generation of farmers on organic farms. These places recreate the link between farmers and citizens, while promoting biodiversity and respect for the soil.”

So, older farmers contact TdL and they arrange a match. Some things are done well here in Europe!
One’s best bet over here is look at groups on Facebook etc and property ads for abandoned properties in the middle of nowhere ( if it is close to nice spots, coast, etc, then expats will snap them up at higher costs).

I'd like to expand this European list to include Tropical North Australia.

I don't know of a way that you can.  It's an anonymous list to protect the Otises' privacy.

30 acre ranch in the Mohave desert, close to a city, updated house, irrigation, orchards, eggs and honey.  Solar greenhouse, rental trailers, grid tied electric, adobe structures and more.  PEPper can start as a work exchange for food, lodging and salary.  Need to have a number of particular Sand badges done (approximately halfway to PEP1)
