Hi All-

FYI- Yesterday Jocelyn and Paul tried a Sunday walkabout and podcast, and Jocelyn broke her arm and is home now, with a cast.

Here's a thread for us to send Jocelyn well wishes for a speedy recovery!

Broken bones are awful painful. I hope you feel better soon. Hopefully there is some comfrey handy.

when it comes off you can air it out and sell it on ebay!

Still in the temp cast made of formable fiberglass pieces held on by an ace bandage due to swelling. Getting full fiberglass cast on Thursday. They have an option now of having it fiberglass on the inside - no cotton liner - so you can get it wet and even rinse inside when it itches. (Which might be good since I don't have any knitting needles, Leila! ) I get to choose a color - weird, 'cuz I don't care much about that.

Diagnosis was "fracture of radius, distal, with ulna, closed." Go big or go home, eh?

The fiberglass casts are nice. Dilute a little thyme tincture in water to pour down the cast. Apple cider vinegar too. Both will keep your skin healthy and help with the itching. I still loved my butter knife for scratching, but the herbal solutions will be really helpful and healthful.

When I had my fracture, my brother joined me in playing Jane McGonigal's SuperBetter game, where you ID "power ups" and recruit "allies". I recommend it. We didn't use the game's website, just the ideas, because it was unclear if the website was going to stay up. But it's still there, so I don't think it's going anywhere. http://www.superbetter.com. SuperBetter was just fun, and put me in my "hero" mindset, which I liked better than my combined "Crap! How did I get here!?" and sometimes stubborn bloody-minded disinclination to ask for help.

Hey, since someone mentioned comfrey earlier, how do you use it? I thought is was for use as a topical, but can it be consumed as tea? Will Comfrey tea help your bones knit, too?

I also second the advice to try the SuperBetter game - it's awesome!

Jocelyn, so sorry to hear about this! BTDT and it sucks, don't it? Here's wishing you a speedy recovery but in the meantime, milk it - make the Crazy Man wait on you and do all the chores. Bwhahahahaaa.

I broke both wrist during the Survival Summit. LOL! I will be going to Missoula this week to get them set. I can sympathize and hope you get back in the swing soon.

Just thought this was a good time to tell you how much I appreciate all the work you do!

Here's my input on the best treatment for a broken bone. Use Homeopathic remedy for comfrey called: Symphytum (it heals it way faster and takes away the pain). Also a 200 C dose is better than a 30 C dose but both are ok. Then for the nerve pain take Hypericum (Homeopathic), and for the muscle pain and bruising take Arnica (Homeopathic). All of these are little tablets that you dissolve under your tongue. Caffeine may antidote them.

The other thing that helped me was eating an anti inflamatory diet! You can't believe how much this helps. I was literally out of pain when I followed it and back into extreme pain when i went off it, in spite of the pain pills. I found that for me Naproxin worked better than anything else for a pain pill but many times I didn't need it if I followed the diet and was careful.

Exactly!

Coffee (from the big guy), for me, is a big no-no in pain management.
My pain level increases with coffee intake. Tea doesn't do it, so I don't think it is caffeine.

Bad Break Jocelyn.

We mentioned on FB that you should be taking Comfrey, so hope that you have some. At our age, bones mend much slower than when we were young so the added actions of taking Comfrey can aid in your healing. Arnica is ONLY for swelling and bruising and is not for mending bones.

Take Foods High In Calcium

Also eating more Calcium rich greens can also assist. Stay away from Cows milk as that creates an inflammatory response and pasteurized Milk depletes the calcium from your bones

I know it sounds silly but I use walking poles (they look like ski poles but these telescope to certain sizes) to walk on unstable ground..you may want to check them out.

A couple of years ago, my Mom broke both of her arms due to slipping on ice. She was 73 at the time. She is super active, regardless of the weather (Southern Quebec), so I bought her these boots, hoping to stack the odds in her favor of it not happening again. She hasn't slipped since, and tells me they are very light, comfortable and warm. Take care and be strong!

More wishes for a speedy and thorough recovery here. All those broken bones! Ouch! At least it was closed - that's good! I'm sure you will heal up just fine with all the good folks around you.

I found out on Wednesday that my broken bones stayed in place (yes!) and I can now safely move/use my thumb and fingers without severing any tendons (double-yes!). BUT I will remain in my cast for the whole of the Permaculture Voices trip. Small price to pay, I suppose, for how otherwise all around lucky I have been!

Jocelyn -- Nice update: that's good news!

Glad things are staying together, and no risk of severed tendons. That would be a real bummer. Keep on taking care of yourself!

Just thought I'd post some follow up happiness.

Had some difficulties while in the cast, so was in a cast 8 weeks. In March, at the Permaculture Voices conference, Patricia sat next to me, asked me about my arm and proceeded to do amazing things. She worked with my arm at the first session every day for the four-day conference. She took the swelling out, which got rid of the pain I was still having, and gave me loads of increased mobility. I had my arm back and was able to type with both hands again! Thank you many times again, Patricia!

The cast came off April 4. I saw family and clients the next week in the Seattle area. This week, I received a gift from my daughter for Mother's Day.

It sorta went like this:
ME: thanks for the awesome hippie necklace! (My daughter is decidedly not a hippie and both my kids joke about me, their mother, being a hippie.)
HER: it's a wrap bracelet - glad you like it!
ME: Oh! That's even better - it will hide the Greek black hair my left wrist grew while being in the cast!
HER: yeah, I thought you might enjoy something pretty on your wrist for a change, that's why I thought of it. My friend makes the jewelry and the wrap bracelets don't usually have clasps. I asked her to put a clasp in for you because I wasn't sure if you'd be able to get it on without one while your wrist is still healing.
ME: <speechless and melting in mother-happiness amid the thoughtfulness>

And here is a picture of the wrist, with the wrap bracelet, being able to supinate enough to cup this arrowleaf balsamroot flower for the picture. More happy.
