Unfortunately, it was The Year of the Cutworm over here :(

Fortunately, I had figured out those little jerks last year, and put collars on all of my tomato and pepper transplants... and it worked!


Anyone else have an Unfortunately/Fortunately to share about their garden?

Unfortunately, a cute bushy-tailed squirrel was found drowned in my water barrel this morning.
Fortunately, he is no longer tearing apart the insulation in my ceiling.

Unfortunately, it may have been a nursing female (check the carcass), leaving behind babies that will die, stink and create masses of flies.

Fortunately, recovering the babies and getting them to a rehabber will save you months of serious grossness.

Unfortunately the mower is still not working. Fortunately, the Cinnabar caterpillars are thriving and the property has clouds of darling grey and red Cinnabar butterflies (okay, they might be moths...) and hatching caterpillars everywhere!

I am fortunate to have beautiful potato plants.  I was unfortunate when the deer found them. I was fortunate when covering the plants with a sheet work to keep deer from eating them and also helping hold in some moisture.

It was unfortunate that ants found my potato bed and our water faucet.  I am fortunate to have found, here on permies, that ants don't like coffee grounds. I have known about killing them with vinegar for years so I am fortunate that with the aid of coffee grounds and vinegar, I no longer have a problem with ants in the potato bed.

Unfortunately, the Juneberry bushes have grown too large to protect them with bird netting,....
Fortunately, the cedar waxwings seemed to be at a planning committee retreat elsewhere in the world this year! :-)

Unfortunately, it's been one of the hottest summers on record, with very little rain.

Fortunately, the concepts and principles of permaculture I've implemented since joining Permies have greatly helped keep everything alive & allowed me to get nice harvests from many things.

Unfortunately my health has been bad, and the weeds, especially prostrate knotweed, are totally amok here. And also unfortunately, the Japanese beetles are up and running.
Fortunately, the beetles are currently on on the knotweed! If I had to pick something to let them eat, it would be that weed. And it's easy to see the beetles on it to pick them off and execute them.

Unfortunately, none of the tomatillo seeds I saved germinated after two tries.
Fortunately, a friend saved some and hers germinated and she gave me babies which seem quite happy in a new raised bed I built (with lots of punky wood at the bottom to hold moisture!)

Unfortunately the rental house I chose to move into last summer clearly had round-up sprayed by the prior tenant and/or the landlord prior to my move-in.

Fortunately some broadleaves have come up in most places, including clover, sunflowers, and other plants, too.

Unfortunately everything planted in the ground that is heavily mulched with the Routh Stout method is extremely stunted. I believe it is due to cold soil temps in the spring.

Fortunately my 8x25 hoop house which has peppers tomatoes and cucumbers is jam packed and flourishing nicely.
