Imagine you are going into your favourite bakery to get some treats - what do you choose?

And what are your favourite treats to bake at home?

Is there any treat that you love and that you’d like to see a healthy version of?

My children are telling me I should write a cookbook of treats, and that they need to be the official taste testers. We’ve been compiling a list of ideas to work on and are wondering if there’s anything we’ve missed.

We have a local bakeshop that opens one day a week and we make a point to stop by.

The owner makes a strawberry cheesecake tart that just blows me away.

My wife really enjoys her S'mores cookies as well.

We don't have any bakeries though when I was younger my friends introduced me to a bakery.

Every time we went I got something different to try.

Chocolate eclairs and cream puffs is what I remember.

When my kids were little I worked near a bakery where I bought something like a Cream Cheese Danish.

Now day My favorite is Sausage Biscuit.

I'd be interested in seeing your version of a good old fashion southern pound cake if you haven't already developed one.

Speaking as a former baker... I can't do it, lol. My 'favorite' depends on what's available and very fresh, when I walk in. If it's still warm, that's probably what I'll buy. At the first bakery where I worked, (which also is/ was my all time favorite bakery), there were many things but the one thing I've not been able to find since they sold it is a specific coffee cake. It's a laminated dough, extremely buttery, with cherry pie filling dolllops on top, and buttered pecans, throughout. I was never privy to that recipe. I really just need to start the journey to recreate it. It shouldn't be difficult - just a matter of pinning down the exact dough recipe.

Otherwise? Macarons, pan au Chocolat, eclairs, creme horns, fruit tartlettes, Napoleons, Russian tea cakes, ... most, of what I like, I just make, including finding keto or low carb recipes, but some things are just too big for two, and/or don't scale down, well. Orrrr... I'm too lazy to mess with them. 🤪

Some of my favourites from when we used to go to bakeries… Apple turnovers (the kind made from puff pastry, apple pie filling, and lots of whipped cream), chocolate eclairs, cheesecake, almond croissants, chocolate croissants, Danish pastries, cherry pie, bee sting cake, mud cake. Custard tarts and vanilla slice can be nice if made well too.

There’s a thing that I’m not sure exists outside of Tasmania or not called a “house cake” which is this little torte, slightly smaller than the palm of my hand, with a shortcrusty base, a filling that I think is pastry cream, and then berries and a sweet jelly on top. I looked it up years ago looking for a recipe and it doesn’t seem to be known by that name, but I wonder if it has a different name in another country.

i bake a lot, and so when i go to a bakery i want something that i don't make at home. Usually something with buttercream!! I'm partial to a nice cupcake, or those huge cookies with monstrosities of icing, candy, etc. Or a huge almond cookie with that big plop of fudge in the middle.

That said, I almost never get these things, because the local variations aren't to my taste (or they don't exist here). I don't like flaky pastry and I'm meh about cheesecake (omni-present). When I want a treat generally I'll make brownies.

Wow this thread is making me hungry! Yeah any pastry with chocolate or cream cheese or fried apples all sounds amazing. I'll also add that while it's pretty basic, I really like a good cinnamon roll too.

At home I bake pretty simple stuff. I only make pies for Thanksgiving and my husband's birthday because he loves them. The pies are usually peach or apple or mixed berry.  But my favorite treat to make at home is probably chocolate chip cookies. I really really like chocolate chip cookies. Or s'mores honestly. You can make them at home in a toaster oven in less than 2 minutes.  They come out really gooey from a toaster oven because the graham crackers toast and the chocolate melts.

Would I prefer chocolate eclairs? Probably, but I will never make them at home.
