Can anyone describe how to edit and post a video?

I'm a Luddite and I'm guessing there are three or four others in the community as well.  I'd love to post a 2 minute video to get a BB but I don't know how to.  I especially don't know how to do one where the video needs to show 7 different things in 2 minutes but they take 10 minutes to complete (requiring editing).

I have one of those smart phones that will take a video.  Or my digital camera can as well.  I can get either file onto my computer.  I have a Google account so I think I can get into Youtube.

So what program(s) could I use to edit down a longer video?  And how do I get it to youtube (or straight to permies) in the most private way possible?

Can I take short videos and upload them sequentially to the same youtube video so I don't have to edit them?

I honestly don't know how to edit. My extent of editing is to pause the camera and start it up again. So far, thankfully, I haven't had to fastforeward a video I made to get it under 2 minutes. I don't even know how to do that!

I do know how to post to youtube as an "unlisted" video, meaning it won't come up in youtube searches, but anyone who has the direct URL can use it, or anyone who embeds the direct URL.

To make it unlisted, once you click the new video button on youtube, you'll see a dropdown menu that says "permies." Click that to change it to "unlisted." Start your video uploading. If you have subscibers on your channel, you can also click "advanced" and then unclick the option that says something like "notify subscribers." Now your video is completely hidden except for people that follow the link!

Thanks Nicole!  I took two videos of the BB I was doing with my digital camera.  One before and one after.  Both were a tad over 2 minutes.  Since I was talking, I can't really speed it up.  Now that I play it on the computer, there's no sound :(  So I'd have to do a voice over or something.  But I guess I could speed them up now.  

So I can follow your instructions to post.  Now...  How to edit?

How to edit depends on your computer and/or phone.  

For a full on computer, there are free apps.  Sometimes the free app comes with the computer.  

For a phone, I hear that there is stuff, but I don't know the particulars.

My Acer came with something it calls "Video Editor" and "Voice Recorder".  You can't do voice overs or fiddle with audio in the video editor.  The Voice Recorder is basically a simple tape recorder.  I did find a way to merge two videos and speed them up and overlay a recorded voice over but it was pretty cumbersome.  And the finished product is about as fancy as my videos are likely to get (ie. pretty unfancy).

It's free and works great for him.
I haven't loaded or tried it yet, so it's heresay
but he has been very helpful with IT matters before  and was very sure about this program working well.

Josiah has been using some free software called lightworks for the videos i've been uploading.

I started using OpenShot Video Editor.  It is a free app and I think it is part of Linux.  I am able to cut (edit) videos and splice two together.
I haven't yet figured out how to speed up a video or voice over.

I recently learned about iMovie for those with iPhones but haven't done much with it yet.

Thanks Opalyn!  I did find that I had something on my computer already called "Video Editor" which has worked good enough for me.  It can splice together chunks of video, speed them up and trim them as needed.  It's good enough for BBs but not for proper youtube work (in my opinion)

I've fallen in love with Filmora9 for video editing.  It's simple enough that I can use it but complex enough to do stuff.  
Still getting the hang of it.
The only problem is that the free version has a horrid watermark but the other version isn't hugely expencive.  

Youtube has a built in video editor. It's very simple, mostly just for cutting. But if that's all you need than it beats the heck out of going through a video editor with all it's rendering and codecs and whatnot.

If you just want to cut and speed up some clips, windows movie maker is enough.  it's free in widows somewhere.
