tl;dr:  $100 to $200 per video.  Plus an additional $200 for your first video that you filmed here.

To anybody ...   boots, ants, event attendees ...

I wish to get to the point that I have 20 videos in the hopper and am putting out a new youtube video every other day.  Just like I used to.   I feel like the bar for video quality needs to be heavy on substance.   I wish for videos that state what the topic is and will continue to have value 15 years later.  Perennial videos.

Here is a very short video that I think is great:

Here is another great video that is kinda short:

A good video that is a little longer:

The point is:  content rich and a focused topic that is edited.  Each vid is a brick to build a better world.

I'll pay $100 for a video that is less than five minutes.   And $200 for a video that is 8 minutes or longer.  And something in between for something in between.  For something really excellent, I might go higher.

Each video must contain:

   - a shoutout to three top patreon supporters
   - the music at the end and the "if you like this sort of thing" message (does not have to be my voice)
   - about 8 seconds at the end of each video to do “youtube endscreens” which is often a video about a current kickstarter and the like.   This is a good place to put a blooper or something silly.
   - properly balanced, quality sound
   - no editing errors

In addition to the video I need:

  - a strong title
  - the text description
  - tags
  - thumbnail image

If there are people in the video, please make sure they have proper safety gear if they are doing something that might call for it.

For onscreen text, use the font "VAG rounded"

I wish this was for my channel:

There are about a hundred things here that need a video.

People have talked about taking some of my podcasts and condensing them from an hour down to 20 minutes and adding in images.  That could be cool.

One guy did a really cool thing where he read one of my articles into a microphone and added fun imagery.

Some of my stuff could use a video for it.  movies, books, the cards ...   And it would be cool to have a video about the permies forums.  Or a video for each patreon thing.

Some of the PDC and ATC video stuff could have a three minute extraction made and direct people to the product.

Some of our microdocs could have a "trailer" ??

A rock solid and super cool "how to" for select BBs

A summary of the "wheaton eco scale"

UPDATE!  For any video you shot here and got approval from josiah, I will pay an additional $200 for your first video.

ANOTHER UPDATE! Make two hours of movie quality video and I might buy it from you for $3000!  For example, take a bunch of video of the upcoming rocket mass heater jamboree and turn it into a movie.  Or maybe a two movie set and it is $6000!

Is there a place where we can find a list of the top patreon supporters?

In the description for each video is a list of the $3 and up patreon backers, sorted in order of their all-time contribution.   I would just pull off the top 12 of that list.

During the feedback phase, the best path has proven to be to put it up on youtube as unlisted.  Low res has proved to be fine - thus making the upload time quick.

When it comes time for final render, put a full res mp4 file up on google drive.

Here is a video that is excellent that did a really neat substitute for the ending message ("if you like this sort of thing") and alternative music

And here is an excerpt from a podcast

Hey, about the videos... must it be done from a native English speaker? My mother-tongue is Macedonian, that is a Slavic language and when I speak English the phonetic sounds a bit "Russian"

I don't mind the accent stuff - as long as the words are understandable.

There is a youtube channel i REALLY like where the guy is russian (i think) building stuff in the wilderness.

And I like watching the liziki channel - zero english, but the videography is good and I get a clear idea of what is going on without narration.

I am strongly interested in helping on this program, but I will need some help with learning about the editing, and particularly in what editing software I need that will work with my laptop.  Let me know how to connect with Josiah or anyone else who I can talk with about this.  Thanks.

Are you signed up for the bootcamp?  Or have you bought a ticket to the rocket mass heater jamboree?

The struggle we are having is taking the video as well as all the editing stuff.

I am making this offer for people that live here, or are stopping by for a bit.

I'd love to give it a go! I was supposed to come last year actually to take video. Do you have video ready that I can edit? Where can I find it? Also do you have any permies assets like logo don't, etc?
I'll get on this asap!

I wore a GoPro on my chest for a lot of the SKIP event. I've been looking through the footage trying to find good clips.

I tried to record all the times when Mike/Fred were explaining how things worked, but unfortunately the audio capture on it was not that great. I did get one video with relatively clear audio, of Mike explaining how the excavator works, then guiding me through my first scoop. Here it is - let me know if you're interested in it, and I can add all the relevant bits you posted.

If I find anything good in my footage, I'll post it.

Not sure if this would be helpful, but thought I would offer just in case…

I am a long-time broadcaster/narrator/voice actor with a wide range of delivery.  If anyone should need a narration track for their project I can produce one of professional quality in short order.  Due to pressing commitments, I am unable to travel for video production at present, but would be happy to contribute audio tracks for a fair fee.

Best,

John

It sounds like you are familiar with some very professional gear!  Do you wanna do the editing too?  Or do you wanna join forces with somebody on this thread willing to do editing?

I'm going to toy with this idea.  I need monies by next spring to improve some equipment and I wouldn't mind doing one or two videos to see if I like this sort of thing.  If I do like it, I could see doing 20.

To clarify, this offer is only for folks that can travel to Montana and attend events and the like? I could make lots of videos of my own techniques in gardening, plant breeding, growing tress from seeds and the like, I've been doing it for fifty years but I haven't been west of the Mississippi river in thirty years and likely won't be again.

I've been using wondershare filmora for my video making.  It costs money to get the full version, but one can do a subscription or a single payment depending on the needs.  The free version leaves a huge watermark on the finished video, but it's good for basic learning to see if one likes working with the software.

What I like about this software is that it's simple enough that even my brain can figure out how to do it with a few googles of "how do I crop video on filmora?" and the like.

This is one of my favourite YouTubers and his recent video on free editing software called DaVinci Resolve

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve

The great (and worst) thing about DaVinci is that it is extremely professional.  The reason for this software is to get people to buy their hardware.  So they made software for professional filmmakers that has more functions and is more powerful than any of the adobe stuff out there.

Here's a thread where I work through my learning process to get some basic video editing understanding: https://permies.com/t/133957/art/hard-edit-youtube-video

We could also make a new thread for questions and resources for people interested in making videos for Paul.

...

Personally, I'm nervous about taking on this task.  I've worked with Paul enough to know he's got an eye for quality and I'm not entirely certain my skillset is up to the level his channel needs.

But then again, this is also a good reason to take on these tasks because I'll learn loads.  I expect it will take a lot more hours than I anticipate, but by the end of it, I'll have learned how to make a much higher quality product than I'm making right now.

There is stuff here that I would like to get into video.  So, yes, it is for stuff here.

If somebody takes poor video and they work with josiah - josiah will say it needs to be reshot.  Kinda hard to do if you have left.

All right, so I've compiled GoPro footage from building a dry stack retaining wall for an earthworks BB. It's sped up 2x and I added some captions explaining what I was doing. Audio is left as is, although it's high pitched from the speeding up. My camera ran out of battery as I was working, so I didn't get footage of the final step of backfilling it.

I'll probably produce a few more rough videos like this. I don't know if Josiah would prefer to wait and look at them all together, or give feedback as I produce them.

Glad to pay for videos that meet a certain quality standard.

Good substance per minute.  Good sound.

I feel like the threshing vid is a good example.   Good content packed into less than a minute.  Because the sound quality wasn't so good, I did a voiceover.

excavator vid:  the sound is weak.   Editing and a voiceover could make something okay.

drystack:  needs editing and a voiceover.  Did you speed it up - kinda feels a bit too rollercoastery.

Okay, solid feedback. The drystack one was sped up. I can do smaller clips that aren't sped up and add a voiceover.

I'll try putting the audio for the excavator through a high pass filter and see if it gets better, I think having Mike's explanation is valuable.

I'll keep trying with the editing. It's not a skill I've practiced before, so it'll probably be rough still.
