There might be mites as large as this thing but I don't think so. This is 10x-20x times larger than mites I'm most familiar with & it flies. At least it did before I caught it, stuck it's butt in silver paste, & possibly put it in a critical point dryer. Then probably sputter coated it with gold or carbon but maybe not. After that it was put in a vacuum chamber & pumped down to approximately the same vacuum level as outer space. Then I zapped it with what appears to be a 5000 volt electron beam to create this image. Maybe much higher voltage at first. Notice the missing eye. Bad things happen when biological samples get too much voltage. I worked in all sorts of labs & research facilities but primarily semiconductor labs & factories. Sorry bug, stay off my lawn lab.

There hasn't been any guesses in about 24 hours. Everyone gets participation trophies but no cigars. That was a gnat.

Sort of. Maybe. Possibly. Those are bonding pads that connect an integrated circuit to the outside world before the device is encapsulated. I have no notes about exactly what specific devices are shown. Could be almost any integrated circuit.

Here are some more examples.

It's worth pointing out that some of those pix show some defects which is probably why I took them in the first place. The whiskers on the set of leads on the bonding pads is not normal. The splattering on the other is also a defect. The middle picture appears to be a defect with the etch process. "Chips" are made with many layers, each having an etch process done to it. Put some stuff on then take some of it off. Rinse & repeat.

Okay, that's pretty much what I thought I was seeing, too.

Thanks for that, now I'll be walking around the rest of the week with the music from Koyaanisqatsi stuck in my head...

Says 1 nanometer there at the bottom, with a scale line that's about the width of one of the spheres...

So, what are they exactly?

Look at that strange character again. They are latex spheres used to check astigmatism in electron microscopes.

I'm puzzled... No GUESS what this is. It was in a drawer under the bathroom sink, which really doesn't mean a lot, there was some odd stuff in there.
Plastic. Looks like it's well designed.... to do something....?  No guess.
What is this thing?? (And why was it under the sink, for bonus points!)

It looks like a funnel. For filling 55 gallon drums possibly.

Hmm... don't think so. The mouth is too small, I'd make the whole funnel bigger if I was using it for 55s. The thing I use for them is much larger.

Don't think so.
Funnel of some sort? But why are the threads where they are, and what's the bar for?

What are those sitz bath things that fit on a toilet and spray water at your private parts post surgery? Would it be the part on top that directs the spray?

Hm.... I came up with a sort of idea for the blue thing, maybe it'll trigger a better thought in others...

See the pale part there used as a connector? I would not put it past mom to say "I don't need this whole breathing thing, this is the only relevant part" and tossing the rest.  She broke her leg hard, and was in the hospital and rehab etc, then in a rental that was wheelchair accessible while I was packing houses so we could move, maybe she got it someplace in all that and moved it so she could exercise her breathing with it?

Funny you think it might have been breathing related, I was thinking something like a loudspeaker or voice synthesiser funnel....

However we are both wrong - ever had a water pillow? Looks like it is a funnel and the strange split is to remove the cap before filling.

Hahaha POINTS for you!! I DO have one! Or did.... I tried it for my severe neck pain.  I'll look and see if I still have it!

I'd have NEVER figured that out, THANK YOU!!  :D
Putting a label on it before I forget what it is again!

EDIT:
Labeled!!
And I looked up where my pillows are, without getting a stool I can't check for sure, But I think it's up there.

This one is puzzling me. I have been given a little metal/glass table with a seat. I think of it as a hallway telephone table, but am going to put it in my polytunnel as an amenity.

telephone table

It has a strange perforated metal shelf welded on alongside the top glass surface. Slightly recessed - about an inch. Why?

perforated recess

If it were for plants to drain, they would drip into the shelf underneath, which seem less than ideal. Any ideas as to the function of this little sieve?

It is welded into the frame of the table so is not removable. I think it has always been that way.

As you say, it makes not sense for it to hold something like plants and have them leak all over the lower shelf.

My next thought was some sort of equipment from that era, which needed to not overheat? Metal and it would allow airflow. Phones didn't require such a thing, but possible a radio?

I think that a valve radio might benefit from air flow, that's a good thought.

Are we thinking this was a handmade one-off item?  Is it possible that recessed tray was for the phone, and that's just the part they had to construct it?

Is the cushioned seat section made from the same perforated sheet metal under the cushion?

I suppose it could be that old. I was thinking it dated from the 1970s. Hallway isn't the obvious place to put the house radio (edit - but maybe it isn't a telephone table at all?). I'll see if I can find out more about the age of the table.

It seems to be handmade, although whether it was a one off is unknown. I would have thought that just making the glass top the full length would have been far easier, unless there is a specific purpose to the recessed area. The cushion may be a replacement, but it is supported by a metal crossbrace halfway and (presumably) a wooden board hidden inside the cushion, no mesh.

Correction - the tray is removeable! I was looking for makers' marks and turned the table on it's side, having removed the glass surfaces, and the tray fell out! What I thought were welds were just blobs of paint.
I couldn't see any maker's marks though. The wrought iron is bent into the shape of stylised tulips. I guess the table could be factory made. I can't find anything similar on a web search.
