Over one hundred people have spent half a minute of their life watching my paint dry.

I checked the stats, the average view time is about 29 seconds.

This amuses me.

I think it needs a better thumbnail.  Something stupid and eye-catching - that tells the person how boring the video is and discourages them from watching.

But done in a fun way.

If people wanted to have fun designing said thumbnail (1280x720pixels) there may be a prize for the creator of the one I pick.

A real-world prize I can send in the mail, not just happy digital stuff.

Let's just have crazy fun with this.

I like this contest idea.

rules
guidelines

  • 1280x720pixels in size (landscape)
  • fits youtube guidelines (pretty easy to do but this is mostly a reminder to me to check before posting, like looking both ways before crossing traffic)
  • is extremely honest about the contents of the video

  • Timeline?  I don't know.  we'll play it by ear.

Mmmm as I read your post the idea of sheep jumping the rail as if it was a fence popped up zzzzzzzz and quickly did the image attached. Maybe the visual is sufficient enough to make it clear  but  adding words can help too. *attaching new one with a little add on :)

Hmmmm, what if the sheep said something, instead of having numbers? Maybe "Don't watch! Very Boring!" Or something else. I just quickly threw the words on the original video title up. If you like the idea, feel free to run with it...or jump fences with it, or whatever!

(Note: I'm not entering the contest, because this idea is really Andrés's!)

Low-quality, quick version. Maybe Andrés can make it better if you like the idea!

    Te he.

The big thing is to make sure i don't promise anything other than what is in the video.   Have to be totally truthful or youtube will be angry.

Yeah because I've never clicked on a youtube video that was something entirely different than what the thumbnail led me to believe it was. /sarcasm/

... I have nothing useful to contribute. Just wanted to point out youtube's hypocrisy here.

Gotcha. A world without clickbait would be a nicer place to live, that's for sure.

I watched your video (all the way to the end!) and I think you could make a great kids channel with this type of content. At least, whenever I'm trying to get paint to dry my kids can't seem to stay away 😁

I clicked on it for fun and went to Youtube to see how many had watched it.  For a 30 second clip Youtube started it with a commercial.  The commercial started off with a picture of purslane and so I thought how funny it was that I would watch a 30 second commercial to see a 30 second clip....then I realized that it was really sort of a 34 minute infomercial.  What the heck?  That purslane was really pretty, but....

That's why I'm eager to get to monitization.  That way I can stop them from putting ads on some of the videos and select what ones go there.

As it is right now, youtube puts ads on my videos and takes all the money.  It's okay I suppose, but I would like more control over the viewer experience for the videos I create.

We have joint winners!  Nicole and Andrés

I'm guessing I send Nicole some wool for needle felting.  Or something else?
Andrés, I'll send you a PM asking what you would like.

How would you both like your credit to appear in the video description?

In other news, 135 people have now wasted half a minute of their life watching this video.  This amuses me.

I sent the prizes a couple of weeks ago.  But there are some technical issues with the post office at that time (more than just the normal covid stuff), so there may be delays.

395 people have now watched paint drying.

It also has one of the best click-through rates of any of my youtube videos.  And yet, I tell them exactly what's in the video and not to watch it.
