Thanks Carla and Tereza!

I was bummed to think she was gone so am very much relieved now...kind of silly maybe as I've never felt attached to a spider before...
At least I haven't named her

Trying to get some better photos of her egg case and it's attachment points.

Perfect competition for Permies: Name Judith's spider! Get some names suggested and then do an apple poll? Or just let everyone make suggestions and then let Judith choose? I'd put that in the Dailyish for sure!

How about Lacy Lynx, since she's such a delicate lady?

Sounds good to me!
Although I don't want to decide so a vote sounds good.

Esmeralda!

Esmeralda Name Meaning
The name “Esmeralda” has a beautiful meaning – “emerald.” Emeralds are known for their stunning green color and are often associated with growth, renewal, and success. They are also said to bring good luck and protection to the wearer. So, naming your little girl “Esmeralda” would mean that you wish her a life full of growth, renewal and success, and may she always be protected and lucky.

From here.

Is it just my impression, or is this year's egg sack even larger than last years?

I think similar size...I even thought slightly smaller?
It might be that the smaller blueberry leaves as opposed to the larger hazelnut leaves the mom was on at this stage last year cause it to look a different size?

I wish I could dangle something for scale up close to it...any ideas?

Has she stopped eating?  Catch a grasshopper, tie a thread to one leg, and dangle it down slowly to beside her egg sack?

Yes, the size difference could be relative to the leaves.

So, do you think that after their sexy-fun-time, those grasshoppers will be ummm... invited in... for dinner?

Haha!
I am going to go check soon...Last year we wondered if she somehow lures them in close as they don't seem to fear her.

They are very close to the strands of silk that signal her though.

Earlier a single grasshopper was under the leaf she is on and peeked up at her.  She did something fast...maybe spit at it and it disappeared just as quick.  It fell I guess?

Overnight she has made a network of silk across the top of the blueberry bush...it is connected by long strands to pointy shaped 'webs' on several tips.

Since she doesn't usually draw silk as organized as these cones, I wonder if those webs belong to other spiders and she has only connected to them to steal bounty?

Because she is hungry, as you wondered?

She did kill a jumping spider once but it seems like the abundance of grasshoppers would keep her busy?

It seems like there are plenty of hoppers, and she'll take a while to eat one, so I'm surprised you haven't seen that yet. Maybe she really just doesn't want to leave the egg sac- this way she could catch-and-stash?

The last I saw her eating a grasshopper was here https://permies.com/t/160/224345/green-lynx-spider-peucetia-viridans#2624308
before the egg case but they've certainly been close enough to spit at since

Yesterday...are they taunting her or just totally oblivious?

...most of the webbing in the previous photo was gone yesterday morning.

Hmmm... do grasshoppers need to drink the blood of spiders to lay eggs successfully? Is this a new mutation? Zombie grasshoppers?

When I checked on her today I thought she looked thin and off color.
I even wondered if she had been stung by one of the bumblebees that come to the dahlias so I got Steve to come look and when we got back she had caught a ladybug

Does she get skinnier? I though when she laid the eggs and wrapped them in the sac, her job is mostly done engergy wise, except protecting the sac. Or maybe she still needs to produce more silks?

She seems thinner and off color but I haven't tried to compare to last years pics of her mom....seems like she didn't lose her bright green untill after the eggs hatched.

I've wondered also if the color change is just to blend in with the egg case.

At 1pm I took a photo and when cropping it saw the bits of white that we remembered from last year were the discarded egg casings from the hatch inside the egg case!
They are no longer visible in the next photos at 3pm because she has moved and they may have just fallen away.

Spiderlings soon!
