Is there a place where children run free?

Is there a place where children run free, have the safety and proximity to roam from their own home to their neighbors and friends’ homes? Where it is normal to home school, or even to unschool?

I have a vision for my family and my children. In my vision, my family has a home which is in close geographical proximity with other families (i.e. no driving).

Here people value community and the synergism created by folks helping and supporting one another and also there is enough autonomy that not all aspects of life have to become communal.

Bodily autonomy is sacred here and no man or woman is interested in fear mongering or coercive tactics.

This community is headed in an entirely different direction than where main stream culture is headed. Folks here truly live by the principle of doing unto others as you would have done to you, and when we slip up, there is direct and honest communication.

Screens are sparse, used sparingly and people spend lots and lots of time outside.

There is much knowledge regarding natural building, permaculture, ancestral skills, natural medicine and more to be pooled and shared.

Mamas support one another, take turns watching and or teaching each others children. Older children watch out for and teach young ones. Fathers bring older children along as they are working to gain skills and learn a trade.

Meals can sometimes be communal or we can prepare meals for one another on a rotating basis.

There is no religious dogma. That doesn’t mean that folks shouldn’t be religious, just as long as all paths to the divine are respected as valid as long as they are based on the Golden Rule.

This community is multi-generational. People here are open to caring for their elderly parents.

Are there folks out there already living this? Can we join you?

Or is it time to build this?

What you want is similar to what lots of young families seem to be seeking.  Consider looking at the communities directory at the Foundation of Intentional Community website, there may be something near you that would be relevent.

I fell like a reply to this should start out with "the industrial revolution and it's consequences have been a disaster for the human race". What you're describing sounds a lot like pre-industrial small community life, and sounds like a dream come true. As far as whether or not it exists today....I don't know, nor do I know if it even can, without some folks willing and able to lay out some cash.

I think Wheaton Labs is doing this.  They need more people and families there to build the community.

Hello Lindsay!

Welcome to permies!

I am glad you found us!

We are building such a community out here in Montana.

You can rent a cabin with an acre around it.

Where I live is a perfect place to let kids run free.

My kids have been grown for many years and I have no grandkids. If kids were living here they would be very lonely as no kids are living around here to the best of my knowledge.

I agree, that Wheaton Labs might be one of the best places to consider.

Wheaton Labs has lots of options

Rent an acre!   Your kid can run free on your acre and be pretty free with your supervision on the other 200 acres.
Some acres have a house started and you can complete it to meet your needs.  Some acres are just raw land.
These acres are all together so eventually we will have a little village.  All walkable with families and gardens.

If you can make an initial investment, this is an amazing deal!

Raise your kids, build a house and gardens, live be free and happy.

Speaking of... where is my damn kid? School starts back up tomorrow!

Anyways. I would say that everywhere I have lived, in the US or Germany, had kids running around in the woods or in town, completely unsupervised. Where I live now though is sort of how Anne describes; perfect but with few kids right now. Lots of new kids under 5 in the 'hood though. Gonna be real fun in a couple years. My youngest is 13 so we have to import city kids for him to play with hahaha.

For most folks the place to start is to rent a cabin and see how it feels to be here.   This place is it's own world.  Set aside from the commotion.  We do things differently intentionally.

If you have to get out of the crazy, this is a wonderful place to land, rest and reset.

Maybe you will want to stay here forever or maybe you just need a place to heal so you can think straight and create the future you choose.

Hello Dan!

I think that is a great way to go.   Build an amazing place for your kid and import some friends!

My kid is pretty over all the farm, garden and animal stuff I do here but kids who live the city life love to come out and play on our farm.  Having other kids enjoy the place makes it more fun for him.

Hello Lindsey!

We do have kids come visiting.  Families come to out events or rent a cabin as a place to take a family vacation.

The kids can run free and explore nature in a clean and safe environment.  They can learn skills, garden and grow up around people who eat organic food and treat each other with respect.

I am also a single mom and I would love to live at Wheaton labs.

I have a farm in eastern WA and we spend time at Wheaton Labs when we can.   We rent bunks in the Ficher Price House because he wants to be in the center of the action.

I would love to rent an acre of ant village and build my permaculture dream house there.

I hope you come out and visit us and give it a try.

That's a very good point Samantha. My boys are the same way. Kinda over it, until a friend comes over and is like, "Wow! You have this or that?..." Hahaha.

Really my wife is similar. Wondering if our shack of a house is "nice" enough to have her boss over and then when the boss shows up she is amazed (and maybe slightly jealous) just by the beauty, the quiet, and the privacy from all the outdoors around the house!
