I suspect this will greatly vary depending on what people wear in the garden.

Would you rather have to wear your gardening clothes all the time or never wear your gardening clothes?

Fair enough :)

I actually would often do the opposite. I could come home in a nicer pair of pants and collared shirt (casual professional). I would go out to the garden "just to see how its doing" and inevitably get caught up harvesting or weeding or watering in my nicer clothes.

Or do you mean would I rather garden with clothes or without them?

Maybe I aspire to someday have a garden I can tend to without clothes. Though it might be itchy…

I suppose never as church stuff, funeral, weddings etc would be a problem in gardening clothes.

Difficult choice.

My first instinct is always because I want to discourage people from interacting with me.

But I'm going with never because there was a time, not so long ago, when there weren't gardening clothes.  I see pictures of farmers in England in the 1950s labouring away in a suit jacket, suit pants, vest and white shirt.  In that part of England, at that time, they only had two suits of clothing (and 2-5 shirts).  Everyday, do everything suit and the Sunday best to wear on washing day.

I love the idea of looking classy while shovelling out the chicken shit.

This is a puzzler.
I'm a pretty casual dresser.
Given my life right now (no garden) I would say gardening clothes never. I'd just garden in my normal every day clothes, which is what I mostly do if I need to work outside now.
Given my dream life (clothes made from natural fibers only), all my clothes would be very similar. In that case, gardening clothes all the time. And my gardening clothes, when clean, would be appropriate for any occasion (though unconventional, and probably not looking like anyone else's idea of a wedding or funeral outfit).

Hey if they're clean and not ripped or stained I'd wear the anywhere. I'd rather wear them all the time.

I am not sure what the distinction between the two types of clothes are.  So, I suppose I already wear gardening clothes all the time.

Now, having said that,  30 years ago a business associate visited us.  We lost tract of her and looked outside our kitchen window to see her in our garden picking tomatoes …. Wearing a business suit and heels.

We should throw him a surprise party. It will cheer him up. We can use this tiny ad:
