Hi All,
If you answer, please try to think up a question too.

I am planning a meetup for Permies (and others) in Maine - https://permies.com/t/237140/Maine-Permies-Meetup if there are any Mainers, who see this and not the other.

I want some help to come up with some "Would You Rather?" questions to help start conversations over a meal. If you have never played, the idea is to ask a question with two choices which are difficult to choose between. They could be fantastic or funny or gross or just about anything. I'd like them to be Permaculture / homesteading themed. Here are a few I thought of to get us started.

  • Would you rather have your garden eaten by deer or by raccoons?
  • Would you rather have a magic fairy who would keep your garden watered at just the right amount all season long or a magic wizard who could process and preserve all of one crop in a single second?
  • Would you rather get a free consultation from a permaculture designer who smelled like rotten eggs to anyone in a 100ft circle, but was otherwise a great communicator, or get a free consultation from a permaculture designer who could only communicate by shouting at the top of their lungs?
  • Would you rather have the ability to teleport anywhere on your property to reduce travel time, or have the ability to talk to animals to reduce problems with livestock?

    1.  Deer. Easier to permanently drive off. Less spread of disease to my animals. Much tastier.

    2. Wizard. I can learn from the wizard, can't learn to be fairy. Also, all the older stories about fairies show that you really want to avoid them. Dangerous and notional, with non human values. A wizard, you are dealing with a person , not a species with its own culture and agenda.

    3. The smelly consultant  can always be stood downwind.

    4. Teleport. I eat animals and while I think I am a hard person, I think that would really cause me issues. Plus, teleport is a incredible power with unlimited utility.

Note, I think anyone not a vegan who chooses talk over teleport is some sort of dangerous sadist.

Fair enough, I hadn't thought about it that way. How about this?

Would you rather have the ability to teleport anywhere on your property to reduce travel time, or have the ability to always make your livestock stay where they are supposed to without fencing?

Perhaps a different way of approaching the what ifs of questions might be to ask about all the good and wonderful things to be learned.
Perhaps instead of proposing having a Fairie or a Wizard simply work for you, almost as slaves, or asking animals how they can help benefit you, ask what they know.

~If you could ask a Fairie any question, what would you ask?
~If you could talk with a Fairie, what would you ask them that would help the world?
~If you could ask any animal any question, what would you ask?
~If you could talk to a raccoon, what would you ask about their lives?

The thing about it is, is that you can talk with the Animals. You can talk with the Fairies. And the Stones. And the Plants. And the Waters. They all want to talk with us. We just don't listen. --But if you were to ask? What would you ask? We really don't need to be in opposition with Peoples, or things. We can co-operate.

Here's the thing guys,  I talk to all my livestock now...
If I owned 100's of acres maybe teleporting on my land would be a good thing.
Now if I could teleport in the entire N.W. then I might consider it.

So as talking to livestock goes, all they think about is what or where to eat next... maybe a drink of water, or a nap.
If it's a whole boy livestock we all know what he is thinking about and it's not eating...

I doubt I'll be discussing the different ways to cook pork chops with them, more like hey bud let's go out to the north pasture today
there is a cold creek and lots of shade with green grass sounds like you might like it!

I hear some fair points, but lets get back on track. This is supposed to be "Would You Rather" questions. They are not meant to be deep philosophical questions, but rather quick questions to get an idea of the type of person answering.

Would you rather have 10 apple trees that all produced at the same time or 10 apples trees that each produced during a different month of the year?

The point is not to discuss whether apple trees can produce 10 months out of the year, or the stress of having all those apples at the same time... its just a lite questions. I like applesauce and apple cider, so I want them all at once. Or the other person likes to eat them fresh, so would like them spread out. I don't want to take a lite-hearted game and turn it too deep.

I just had a great idea from Pearl. I'm going to make each question it's own thread. That way, if you want to answer the question and start a discussion of that particular question, we can. If you have more suggestions for more questions, then post them here.

I hope some of these are good. I'm taking the "throw it against the wall and see what sticks" approach to question making.

    1. Would you rather, in a garden, deal with limited water resources or limited soil amendments?

    2. Would you rather give up ever eating tomatoes again or corn?

    3. Would you rather your chainsaw always started on the second pull or that it never would run out of bar oil?

    4. Would you rather never wearing out your outdoor work shoes ever again or never having to replace a tool handle ever again?

    5. Would you rather have house plants in every room of your house or none at all?

From where I sit #2 is kind of a trick question.  I have long loved swamp country as well as desert.
I don’t think I would change either. In my backpacking days I loved to sit up at night and watch all the glowing  eyes watching me,

***Please note this thread has morphed into a place to collect all the would you rather questions. I'm creating individual threads to actually answer and discuss***

  • Would you rather start with a 5 acre hayfield that has not been sprayed and is a blank slate to lay things out how you want or a 5 acre orchard that was abandoned 50 years ago and is so overgrown with weeds and brush that you can barely tell it was an orchard?
  • Would you rather have a tractor that keeps breaking down or a stubborn mule that never wants to work?
  • Would you rather have perfect weather or perfect soil?
  • Would you rather have an upright freezer where it is easier to find things or a chest freezer that uses less electricity?

Whilst pondering what you would rather, I highly recommend listening to this “Would You Rather?” theme from the eponymous game played on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast:

Late to play, answering original questions.
Would you rather have your garden eaten by deer or by raccoons?
Deer because I like looking at them. Raccoons are too much like humans and that scares me.

Would you rather have a magic fairy who would keep your garden watered at just the right amount all season long or a magic wizard who could process and preserve all of one crop in a single second?
Processing wizard for sure. I enjoy watering and have timers for when I don’t have time to do it. I process, but don’t enjoy the process.

Would you rather get a free consultation from a permaculture designer who smelled like rotten eggs to anyone in a 100ft circle, but was otherwise a great communicator, or get a free consultation from a permaculture designer who could only communicate by shouting at the top of their lungs?
I’d take the yeller over the smeller. I’m used to loud people because I married one.

Would you rather have the ability to teleport anywhere on your property to reduce travel time, or have the ability to talk to animals to reduce problems with livestock?
Talk to animals. My property is big but not huge, a nice walk. I would take teleporting if it were anywhere in the world, or even a 20 mile radius, but not just my property. Although I’m not sure I want the dogs and chickens to have the power to communicate so directly.

I also am answering the original questios because I didn't see the newer ones until just now ...

    1) I would rather have  Raccoons because ...
I think raccoons would eat less than deer unless there were too many raccoons.

    2) I would rather have a magic fairy who would keep my garden watered at just the right amount all season long because  we have been in a drought for the last few years.

    3) I would rather get a free consultation from a permaculture designer who smelled like rotten eggs to anyone in a 100ft circle, but was otherwise a great communicator because there is no reason to shout.

    4) I would rather have the ability to talk to animals to reduce
problems with livestock because talking to animals is fun, especially if they talk back.

  • Deer, they would poo and I love deer poo. in my garden and yard.
The preservation wizard, I struggle sometimes with getting everything saved, and am converting everything to automatic watering.
Smelly - it would remind me to good time spent in the hot pools at Hot Sulphur Springs, CO!
Talk to the animals, then I could find out why the damned gophers keep pulling my plants underground!

10 spread out, then you would get different apples, some sweet some tart some baking some eating some storage.

Raccoons.  They make excellent fertilizer and are much easier to catch in traps.
Fairy.  I have no problems watering.
Smelly one.  My nose does not work.
teleport.    I don't have livestock and I could make money with this teleportation trick.

Would you rather have squirrel or raccoon problems.

Would you rather have an acre of land right around your house or 10 acres a mile from your house (assuming you can't move your house to the 10 acres)?

Would you rather have your garden eaten by deer or by raccoons?

Deer, they're easier to find ways to keep them away then raccoons, they are just too clever.

Would you rather have a magic fairy who would keep your garden watered at just the right amount all season long or a magic wizard who could process and preserve all of one crop in a single second?

Magic Fairy, I spent a lot of my time just watering and having a fairy do it for me would be awesome.

Would you rather get a free consultation from a permaculture designer who smelled like rotten eggs to anyone in a 100ft circle, but was otherwise a great communicator, or get a free consultation from a permaculture designer who could only communicate by shouting at the top of their lungs?

The rotten eggs consultant, I can apply mentholatum to the opening of my nostrils and get by without throwing up.

Would you rather have the ability to teleport anywhere on your property to reduce travel time, or have the ability to talk to animals to reduce problems with livestock?

The ability to talk to livestock, sometimes they have issues that I don't understand, and communicating with them would be a benefit for them and myself, especially with all the time I a out in the field, so having that taken care of frees up more time for growing harvesting and dancing.

    1. Would you rather make your garden the size of your house or your house the size of your garden?
    2. Would you rather travel everywhere on your property using a riding lawn mower or a donkey?
    3. Would you rather build your dream homestead on 10 acres, but lose most of it in a storm or be stuck with a homestead on 1/10th of an acre forever?

    1. Would you rather have only one kind of animal on your homestead or one per kind of animal?
    2. Would you rather have a neighbor bring you a snack whenever you are working in the garden, but never get to choose the snack or have to go get your own snack?
    3. Would you rather have lots of time for a low priority project or be rushed for an important project?
