Just realized that I have not introduced myself, my name is Stephen and I have lived off grid on the dry side of Hawai’i Island for over 5 years. Before that I was in the Florida Keys. I have spent years growing tropical food crops, mostly fruit. When my family and I moved to Hawai’i we had a dream of living off grid and as efficient as possible. I built a small house, no septic system, all water used 2 times composting toilets and a garden. We have recently bought an acre high up mountain in the woods to start a small fruit and vegetable farm to feed my family and make a small amount of $$. I am now a steward of a bit of land with plums, figs, loquats and cherimoyas. We recently planted some citrus and an apple tree. We are in the process of cleaning about 20 years of garbage from squatters.
The information I have learned from you all so far is great and I hope to learn more.

Thank you very much.

I have been at my present location for 27 years, and I am still hauling garbage out of my woods.  Oh yes, welcome to Permies!

Mostly with gray water and a few solar powered  hydroponic systems.

We also grow a lot of cactus.

Dragon fruit. It is night blooming.
