I was nervous because apparently I chose to sharpen Jocelyn's and Coco's favorite kitchen knife. I used sharpie to help visualize the edge I was creating.
Hi Flora, here are the requirements from the first page. I don't think your sharpener counts as a "whetstone". I believe the intent behind this BB is to show you can sharpen a knife using more manual/basic methods.
Requirements to complete:
- must be sharpened with a whetstone (or more than one)
- sharpen secondary edge as well as primary edge
- hone
- test before and after with cutting paper
Ah ok, I didn't get that it has to be a whetstone. I think I have one, although it doesn't look exactly like the ones pictured in this thread. Also, I use it only for the sickle. Which could use some sharpening too!
Several knives needed sharpening, it's Opinel's turn in front of the camera.
I have the King 6000/1000 stone that Paul et al talk about in the sharp podcast. Watching the video in this thread, I added some soap to my normal waterbath I use to rinse the whetstone every 5-10 strokes.

Well played sir!
The more I see of the BB concept, the more I like it. I've been doing my best to help others gain these practical skills in my own small way. But this adds community recognition and a little friendly competition -- the perfect motivators. Brilliant!
Message for you sir! I think it is a tiny ad:
